SNAP Mobile Introduction

Connected game-playing is the future of games.

The wide availability of mobile devices that support Java™ technology and the ability to integrate device-based features, such as contacts and location information, into applications are leading consumers to discover a new way to experience game playing — through connected mobile games.

SNAP Mobile by Nokia is an industry-leading, turnkey, connected-game infrastructure based on Java technology. Games powered by SNAP Mobile run on MIDP 2.0 devices and are available in Europe, the Americas, and the Asia-Pacific region through Nokia and international service providers.

What is SNAP Mobile?

SNAP Mobile is an end-to-end solution for connected games based on the Java™ programming language. SNAP Mobile is the Java platform’s counterpart to N-Gage™ Arena.

SNAP Mobile enables game developers to offer their players cross-operator head-to-head game-playing with versatile matchmaking, supported by features such as a friends list, presence, instant messaging, rankings, tokens, and avatars.

Why should I create games with SNAP Mobile?

First, games based on Java™ technology are among the most popular downloaded applications for mobile devices. Second, the challenge of competing with other players increases users’ interest in SNAP Mobile games, opening up new revenue opportunities. Connected play is the future of mobile games — and SNAP Mobile is your path to that future.

For more information on the business case for developing SNAP Mobile games, please visit the SNAP Mobile Web site. In addition, the SNAP Mobile business development team will be pleased to answer your business-related queries about SNAP Mobile; you can contact the team at fn.snapmobile@nokia.com.

How does SNAP Mobile work?

A SNAP Mobile Game is written as a Java™ ME MIDlet for mobile devices or Java™ SE applet or desktop application. A SNAP Mobile Game implements the game-playing features and UI. It then makes use of the SNAP Mobile API to obtain services, via a mobile network or the Internet, from the SNAP Mobile Community server to offer connected multiplayer game-playing features, such as friends list, presence, messaging, and rankings.

What development resources are available for SNAP Mobile games?

To enable you to create SNAP Mobile games efficiently, Forum Nokia offers the SNAP Mobile SDK. This SDK includes an extensive range of documentation and support options to get you started and to offer help as your project progresses.
