The Multimedia Messaging Service (MMS) is a new, versatile messaging service that can carry multimedia content, including images, video and audio clips, maps, graphs, layouts, ground plans, cartoons, animations, etc.
Today's popular text-based Short Messaging services and Smart Messaging services can be enhanced with richer MMS content. MMS also offers a radically better end-user experience compared to text only-based short messaging services. For example, a weather service can be extended from text-based information to include animated weather maps and forecast graphs with MMS capable terminals. Personalization will be more effective with such as new audio formats and color screens.
Nokia's multimedia messaging solution for operators is a complete end-to-end solution. Messages can be sent from person to person, mobile to mobile, mobile to e-mail, or e-mail to mobile. Nokia's MMS solution will also support prepaid mobile customers. Pull- and Push-type application logic can be implemented over MMS in a fashion similar to how it has been done with SMS-based services.
Thus, operators have a clear technology and business migration path from SMS to MMS in both person-to-person multimedia messaging as well as in mobile services where MMS acts as a bearer for value-added content and applications.
