Huge market potential of location-based services

Location-based services (LBS) are applications that leverage the user's physical location to provide an enhanced service or experience. Location awareness can be used, for example, for navigation and mapping, workforce tracking, finding points of interest, and getting weather information. It presents a compelling new business opportunity for application developers, operators, and content producers. Location awareness differentiates mobile applications from traditional PC and wired Internet services.

In addition to numerous C++ APIs in the S60 platform, the Location API for Java™ ME (JSR-179) is supported from S60 3rd Edition onwards and in some Series 40 3rd Edition devices.

Simple
The S60 platform boosts productivity with easy-to-use APIs and ready-made UI components.

Location Acquisition Interface (LAI) is a middleware technology that simplifies location-based application and services development by giving developers an instant compatibility with any supported positioning method available in the mobile device.

Innovative
The S60 platform fuels innovation with leading-edge location-aware enablers. Landmarks is an open standard technology for creating location tags that record coordinates and metadata about places and that can be shared as files over the Web, multimedia messaging service (MMS), or Bluetooth (BT).

Map and Navigation Framework (MNF) is a middleware technology through which applications can use map and navigation functionalities. It will be provided as a separate plug-in that developers can license (available in Q4/2007).

Standards-based
The S60 platform provides out-of-the-box interoperability with industry-standards compatible implementation.

Secure User Plane (SUPL) is an industry- standard positioning method that creates location estimates in cooperation with a cellular network, thus enabling Assisted Global Positioning System (AGPS), which boosts time-to-first-GPS-fix or compensates for a weak signal while indoors or in urban canyon areas. SUPL is available for licensees and operators to develop and deploy location-based services quickly and cost-effectively.
