Introduction to Device Management
Advanced mobile services such as browsing, multimedia messaging, mobile e-mail, and personal information synchronization can only be used if a mobile phone is configured correctly. However, many customers do not know how to configure their device.
Device management (DM) is a generic term for the systems that can be used by or on behalf of users to configure, manage, install, and update applications and network access settings in mobile devices. With device management, an operator, service provider, or enterprise can help users to use new services and applications, as well as modify existing configurations.
By simplifying configuration, device management offers benefits to everyone in the mobile value chain. It is a key success factor for any organization that has a large number of mobile devices that need to be managed. Device management enables cost-effective service management and efficient use of mobile services.
Client provisioning is the process by which a WAP client is configured with a minimum of user interaction. The term covers both over-the-air (OTA) provisioning and provisioning by means of, for example, SIM cards.
In Nokia devices, OMA Device Management and OMA Client Provisioning specifications are widely supported. The Open Mobile Alliance (OMA) is the leading industry forum for developing market-driven, interoperable mobile service enablers. It was formed in June 2002 by nearly 200 companies including the world’s leading mobile operators, device and network suppliers, information technology companies, and content and service providers. The OMA covers several technologies, from device management to digital rights management and multimedia messaging.
