Just Announced: New Technical Consultancy Service

Download, Buy and Bring Apps to Market with Nokia Content Discoverer

Developers, check out Nokia Content Discoverer (NCD). There are now more aggregators, more ways to bring your applications to market, and more content to download than ever. NCD passed 1 million users a month this past May, a major milestone. To further support NCD, Nokia recently launched a "Catalogs: Fuel up your phone" site that lets visitors download Catalogs and browse games, ring tones, videos, personal productivity applications and more. So check it out today.

Three Sleek New Series 40 Phones

Developers catering to design-conscious consumers have three new Series 40 phones from Nokia for which to create applications and content. The phones are the first from Nokia to use the MicroUSB port, which not only offers a streamlined design free of extraneous indentations, but also lets consumers streamline common activities — such as charging, audio and data connectivity — in a single connection.

Nokia 8600 Luna features a striking stainless-steel and smoked-glass case. The keypad illumination that pulses while waiting for a call; when a call arrives, a sliding movement raises the keypad from within its glass "cocoon." The phone, based on Series 40 3rd Edition, Feature Pack 1, is named after the Roman goddess of the moon — perhaps an ideal subject for this phone's 2-megapixel camera. The Nokia 8600 Luna is expected to ship during the second quarter of this year at an estimated retail price of 700 euros.

Nokia 6500 Classic features a sleek, seamless case of anodized aluminum, available in both black and bronze. This stylish, super-slim ( 9.5 mm.) phone is based on Series 40 5th Edition. It sports an extra-large 1 GB of internal memory for music, images and other multimedia content. A 2-megapixel camera is on board, too, equipped with 8x digital zoom and dual LED flash. The Nokia 6500 Classic is expected to ship in the third quarter at an estimated price of 320 euros.

Nokia 6500 Slide is encased in stainless steel to prevent scratching and fingerprints, and features a smooth-sliding design that can hide or reveal the keypad. The phone, based on Series 40 5th Edition, was designed to handle multimedia applications that include video calls, Web browsing and videoconferencing. For image-capture, the phone's standard applications include Flickr, Adobe Photoshop, and PictBridge. And to accompany these programs, a 3.2-megapixel camera is on board. Also, a TV Out function lets users share both images and videos. The Nokia 6500 Slide is expected to ship in the third quarter at an estimated price of 370 euros.

Developer Spotlight: Telecom Italia Ports to S60 3rd Edition with Open C

For an innovative operator such as Telecom Italia S.p.A (PDF)., moving functionality to multiple platforms is a key challenge. So when Nokia released the Open C plug-in as a key element of S60 3rd Edition, Feature Pack 2, Telecom Italia saw a great opportunity to move functionality that it had created elsewhere onto S60 3rd Edition — and to do so with great speed. "We have to bring innovation to market much faster than before," says Gianni Luca Guglielmi, project manager, Telecom Italia. "This is where the Open C development environment on the S60 3rd Edition platform will help us a lot."

To start, Telecom Italia Lab used Open C in two cross-platform development projects: a multimedia software framework and a SIP user agent framework. The first is a flexible, modular software architecture that enables an application to have a complete set of audio and video standard codecs, streaming protocol stacks, and file formats. The later is the C language version of the multiplatform SIP protocol stack used in the fixed-IP multimedia subsystem network run by the Telecom Italia network. Both frameworks form the base for the development of multimedia applications for platforms that include Windows PC, Windows CE mobile devices, Linux embedded systems, and Symbian OS smartphones.

Take the Open C Challenge

Whether you're new to the S60 platform or already familiar with C++ programming, the Nokia Open C environment lets you easily port existing open source projects to the mobile environment. And now you can win up to $10,000 by entering the Open C Challenge. Open to all developers who port existing code into the Nokia Open C environment, the Open C Challenge will be awarded on the basis of the quality, usability, and creativity.

The Open C Challenge is scheduled to launch in early July. The winners will be announced at the Symbian Smartphone Show in London, U.K., on October 17. For more information on the contest and to receive an e-mail blast when the Challenge launches, write to openccontest@nokia.com.

Make the Most of the Enterprise Market

Selling mobile enterprise applications differs from selling consumer applications. Mobile developers who leverage the enterprise market's unique characteristics can make the most of its opportunities. In fact, roughly 80 percent of mobile developers work on either enterprise or productivity applications, according to Forum Nokia PRO research conducted last summer. Forum Nokia can help developers succeed in enterprise sales by offering market information, access to operators and system integrators, events, and more.
