A couple of weeks ago there was talk about PIPS, Symbian's rendition of POSIX on Symbian OS. As one might guess, Nokia was working quite closely with Symbian on this and on Feb. 7, Nokia announced Open C. As bloggers have noted, Open C adds to PIPS by bringing significant portions of three additional open source projects to S60 development — OpenSSL, GNOME, and LIBZ.

Learn to deliver high-quality S60 applications fast. Nokia's new Accredited S60 Developer program, tailored for developers of native Symbian applications, helps developers understand all openly addressable software components in mobile phones by covering areas common to all Symbian and S60 C++ development work. This program aims to help developers advance their careers and act as sources of best-practice information within the developer community.
SNAP Mobile has added several tools and services, including its Compliance Testing Program and a new Emulation Environment. The Compliance Testing Program gives developers an easy and cost-effective way to ensure that their games meet the high standards set for the SNAP Mobile platform. With the new Emulation Environment. the server environment can be simulated to speed up the development cycle. Many other features have also been made available to game developers, such as added security functions, enhanced Javadocs instructions, and new sample applications. SNAP Mobile will present these and many other new tools and resources at the GDC 2007 March 7-10 in San Francisco, Booth 426.
The PC Connectivity over Bluetooth in Java Applications resource demonstrates how to create Java™ applications that use Bluetooth communication between a PC and a mobile device. From a Java programming point of view, the document focuses on how to configure and use two alternative PC-side solutions: COM-based and JSR-82-based solutions. The complete package contains several code examples for both PC and mobile devices.

Some of the more difficult challenges developers face when porting mobile applications to Nokia's S60 3rd Edition platform involve signing and certification. For example, changes were recently made to the developer certificate requirements and a notice was published immediately on the Forum Nokia developer discussion board in the Symbian Signing Certification, and Security topic area. In the same discussion area, another developer asked if he could get a mobile travel-guide application certified and sold through Nokia sales channels. A Forum Nokia Champion responded with a link to a page describing how to get applications into the Nokia Software Market.

Forum Nokia recently introduced eLearning services to the mobile application developer community. One of the new eLearning modules, S60 UI Architecture, offers a brief overview of the three kinds of application architectures that are possible when writing an S60 application, and progresses to more detailed information. The second of the new modules, S60 UI Controls, Part 1, defines the UI Control and explains how key events are handled in S60. Part 2 of that module goes on to discuss more of the individual predefined UI controls available in Nokia's S60 platform.
