China Market Overview



Mainland China has a population about 1.3 billion, and by Dec.18, 2006, there are two mobile operators: China Mobile (CMCC) and China Unicom (CU). Both CMCC and CU are listed on the Hong Kong Exchange: CMCC’s stock code is 0941, and CU’s stock code is 0762.

Hong Kong’s population is about 6 million. The Hong Kong market has one of the highest penetration rates worldwide, and multiple mobile operators compete in that market, including SmarTone and Hutchison, which are listed on the Hong Kong Exchange.

Taiwan’s population is about 23 million. Again, it is another market with a very high penetration rate. Its mobile operators, include the following:
