The Nokia WRT Plug-in for Visual Studio provides features that enable the creation, editing, testing, and deployment of WRT widgets from within Visual Studio.
WRT widgets are small, task-focused web applications that are installed and run in the same way as other S60 applications. With WRT widgets websites or web services can be optimised for use on S60 devices easily. Because they’re easy to develop and use, WRT widgets are ideal for driving traffic to your website from S60 devices.

The Nokia WRT Plug-in 2.0 for Visual Studio is now available. This version gains features that enable the creation and testing of widgets for all Nokia S60 devices that support WRT. This includes support for the home–screen view capability of the Nokia N97 mobile computer.
The new features include:
The Nokia WRT Plug-in 2.0 for Visual Studio is available in English only. Versions for the Chinese (simplified and traditional), German, Japanese, Korean, Spanish, and Russian languages will be available later.
S60 WRT widgets use standard web technologies, such as HTML and JavaScript™. Visual Studio is a tool that provides development support for these same standard web technologies.
The Nokia WRT Plug-in for Visual Studio adds the features WRT widget developers need to work with Visual Studio. These features enable existing WRT widget projects or widget packages to be imported or new projects to be created easily. WRT widget code can then be written rapidly using features such as Intellisense support for the WRT 1.1 API. Once the widget has been coded, the plug-in provides features to preview, debug, validate, package, and deploy the widget. In addition, the plug-in includes templates that contain the WRTKit library, which delivers images and JavaScript code to enable the creation of visually appealing and functionally rich WRT widgets.
The Nokia WRT Plug-in for Visual Studio enables you to use your favourite web-authoring tool to develop useful, exciting WRT widgets that maximise the traffic to your website or web service from S60 devices.

The plug-in package contains the tools for Visual Studio and links to documentation. The plug-in provides features to create, edit, test, debug, validate, package, and deploy WRT widgets. To facilitate testing, a preview feature includes the ability to preview home-screen views, test widgets against simulated S60 device application and status information, and simulate device events such as those for the charger and memory cards. JavaScript console messages can be observed in the preview also.
The documentation links provide access to the Web Developer’s Library, WRTKit Developer’s Guide, and Nokia WRT Plug-in for Visual Studio User Guide.

You’ll need to be familiar with the development of web pages using standard web technologies, such as HTML, CSS, JavaScript™, and Ajax. No specific knowledge of the S60 platform is required to create WRT widgets.
Next, you’ll need Visual Studio 2008 Standard or Professional with Service Pack 1 installed, which you can download as a 90-day trial or purchase from the Visual Studio page on the Microsoft website. Visual Studio can be installed on a PC running Microsoft Windows XP or Vista. Full details of system requirements are provided in the System Requirements tab of the Visual Studio Professional Product Information page.
Now, download the Nokia WRT Plug-in for Visual Studio.
The Nokia WRT Plug-in is installed by running the installation file and following the prompted installation instructions. Once installed, the Nokia Update Manager will regularly check for updates to the extension.
