What’s the latest news about the Nokia WRT Extension for Adobe Dreamweaver?

Nokia WRT Extension 2.0 for Adobe Dreamweaver is now available in Chinese (simplified and traditional), French, German, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Russian, and Spanish translations. These versions gain features that enable the creation and testing of widgets for all Nokia Symbian devices that support WRT. This includes support for the new home–screen-widget capability of the Nokia N97 mobile computer.

The new features include support for:

  • Web Runtime 1.1 API and S60 Platform Services 1.0 API, with support for code-completion and previewing widgets.
  • Previewing home-screen widgets.
  • Touch-based interaction in the widget preview.
  • Charger, SMS and MMS messaging, and memory-card event triggers in the widget preview.
  • A JavaScript console in the widget preview.
  • Preview update utility for widget projects created in Nokia WRT Extension 1.0 for Adobe Dreamweaver.
  • Comprehensive links to documentation.

WRT widgets use standard web technologies, such as HTML and JavaScript™. Dreamweaver is a tool designed to make working with standard web technologies straightforward.

The Nokia WRT Extension for Adobe Dreamweaver adds the features WRT widget developers need to develop with Dreamweaver. These features allow existing WRT widget projects or widget packages to be imported or new projects to be created easily. WRT widget code can then be written rapidly using features such as JavaScript code completion for the WRT 1.1 API. The extension also provides features to preview, validate, package, and deploy the widget. Widgets can be debugged in Firefox using Firebug. What’s in the Nokia WRT Extension for Adobe Dreamweaver?

The extension package contains the Dreamweaver tools and links to documentation. The extension provides features to create, edit, test, validate, package, and deploy WRT widgets. To facilitate testing, a preview feature includes the ability to preview home-screen mini views, test widgets against simulated Symbian-device application and status information, and simulate device events such as those for the charger and memory cards. JavaScript console messages can be observed in the preview also.

How do I get started with the Nokia WRT Extension for Adobe Dreamweaver?

You’ll need to be familiar with the development of web pages using standard web technologies, such as HTML, CSS, JavaScript™, and Ajax. No specific knowledge of Symbian is required to create widgets for WRT.

Next, you’ll need Dreamweaver CS4, which you can download as a 30-day trial or purchase from the Dreamweaver page on the Adobe website. Dreamweaver can be installed on a Microsoft Windows XP or Vista PC or computer running Mac OS X 10.4.11 to 10.5.4. Now, download the Nokia WRT Extension for Adobe Dreamweaver.

Installation of the English language version is undertaken from the Adobe Extension Manager, which is opened from the Help menu in Dreamweaaver by clicking Manage Extensions. In the Adobe Extension Manager, select Install, locate the Nokia WRT Extension and follow the installation instructions.

The non-English versions of the extension are installed as native Microsoft Windows or Apple Mac applications.

Once installed, the Nokia Update Manager will regularly check for updates to the extension.
