Qt is about to change the way you think about mobile applications development. A single yet powerful set of APIs will enable you to create applications that make the most of the hardware and operating system features on mobile devices from Nokia. However, unlike the traditional native C/C++ development you are accustomed to, Qt will enable you to deliver your applications to both Symbian S60 and Maemo 5, without rewriting your source code. But the advantages don’t end there: With Qt you can take your application forward to desktop environments too. Now you can address more platforms than you ever thought possible while at the same time finding that powerful C/C++ development has never been easier.

Qt is being engineered to become the native framework for Symbian OS. However, you can start working with Qt today, using the Qt 4.6 beta, which includes Symbian S60 support in the core code line.
To create Symbian S60 applications using Qt you will need the familiar tools, an S60 SDK for the devices the application is being targeted at and Carbide.c++ for code cutting and debugging. To this tool set you add the Qt 4.6 beta to access the Qt APIs. Beyond this, coding, testing, debugging, and packaging applications follows the processes you are already familiar with.
You can also extend your use of Qt with the new Qt APIs for mobile development that are being delivered in the Qt Mobility project. This work is in an early stage and more comprehensive support for S60 device features, such as the camera and sensors, is provided by Forum Nokia in the Mobile Extensions for Qt for S60.

Qt is coming to the latest Maemo release, Maemo 5. The forthcoming Qt 4.6 includes a technology preview of support for Maemo 5, offering Maemo developers the opportunity to explore the power of Qt.
To start creating applications for Maemo 5 you will need the standard Maemo development environment: Scratchbox with the Maemo 5 SDK. You will then add the Qt 4.6 beta to your development environment to start exploring the power of the Qt APIs. Beyond that, you code, test, package, and deploy applications just as you always have.
