Mobile Web Server Plug-ins provide a complete implementation of the Mobile Web Server (MWS) for the S60 3rd Edition SDKs. With the installation of the plug-ins, developers of mobile websites, or mobsites, can undertake development and testing on a PC.
The MWS is an HTTP server for S60 devices and is based on Apache web-server technology and Python. The web server and Python enable development of server-side applications for devices based on the S60 platform.
For more information on this technology, visit the MWS technology page »
Mobile Web Server Plug-ins enable web developers to create static or dynamic web pages and test them in an S60 emulator on a PC. This capability eliminates the need to transfer such pages to a device during development, speeding up the development process.
Each MWS plug-in contains the following:
Before you can install an MWS plug-in, you’ll need to have installed an appropriate S60 SDK. You may choose from the following appropriate SDKs: the S60 3rd Edition SDK for Symbian OS, for C++; the S60 3rd Edition SDK for Symbian OS, for C++, Feature Pack 1; and the S60 3rd Edition SDK for Symbian OS, Feature Pack 2. In most cases, you’d choose the plug-in for the S60 3rd Edition, Feature Pack 2 SDK. With an appropriate SDK installed, you can install the MWS plug-in designed for your chosen SDK.
To develop static web pages for MWS, you should be familiar with standard web-markup and scripting technologies, such as HTML, CSS, and JavaScript™. If you wish to create dynamic pages, you’ll also need to be familiar with the Python programming language. You’ll find it advantageous to have a good understanding of the Apache technology on which MWS is based and to understand how Apache serves web pages.
To find out more about getting started with an MWS plug-in, download Mobile Web Server: Installing and Using a Working Environment in the S60 Emulator.
