The Nokia PC Connectivity API (PCCAPI) enables developers of PC applications to add device-connectivity capabilities to their applications for Series 40 and S60 devices supported by Nokia PC Suite.
The Nokia PC Connectivity API is part of Nokia PC Suite and takes advantage of the suite’s existing capabilities. It’s been designed to free application developers from the need to deal directly with the complexities of the connectivity and transmission protocols used by Nokia PC Suite and the need to understand the architecture of connected devices.
For more information, visit the Connectivity & Interfaces technology page »
Using the Nokia PC Connectivity API enables you to create PC applications that communicate with Series 40 and S60 devices, and manipulate the data on those devices. These applications can range from those that offer the convenience of manipulating phone-data on a PC to fully integrated applications that offer a seamless transition from PC to device.
The Nokia PC Connectivity API tool package contains the PC Connectivity API headers, API documentation, and sample applications. The latest version of the tool includes updates to the Device Management, File System, and Content Access APIs, as well as support for Microsoft Visual Studio 2008.
For more information, visit the Nokia PC Connectivity API features page »
To take full advantage of the Nokia PC Connectivity API, you should already be able to develop PC-based applications using Microsoft Visual C++, Microsoft Visual C# .NET, or Microsoft Visual Basic .NET. No specific knowledge of the Series 40 platform or S60 platform is required; however, a basic understanding of how to create a connection between a device and a PC will help you get started.
You’ll need a PC suitable for running Microsoft Visual Studio 6.0, Visual Studio.NET 2003, Visual Studio 2005, or Visual Studio 2008 and Nokia PC Suite.
When it comes to packaging and distributing your application, you might want to consider using the Nokia PC Connectivity Solution and Nokia Connectivity Cable Driver. Without this solution your application will have to rely on users to install Nokia PC Suite. After agreeing to and signing Nokia's distribution licence, you can use the Nokia PC Connectivity Solution and Nokia Connectivity Cable Driver to create complete, distributable application packages that eliminate the need for users to download and install Nokia PC Suite.
