In response to frequent requests from third-party developers for access to private S60 APIs, Forum Nokia provides the S60 API Partnering process. Through this process, developers have been able to access private S60 APIs. Now, many of these APIs have been made available to the developer community through the Extensions Plug-ins for S60 SDKs for Symbian OS.
Please note that no guarantee is provided as to the binary compatibility of these APIs with the various S60 editions or with devices implemented on an edition or feature pack. Developers will need to test applications that use these APIs on target device models.
Developers are strongly advised to read each API’s licence agreement and release notes, included in the plug-in package, before commencing development.
For more information, visit the SDK API Plug-in page in the Forum Nokia Wiki »
The Extensions Plug-ins enable you to make use of a number of APIs that were not included in the initial releases of the various S60 3rd Edition and S60 5th Edition SDKs. As such, these APIs may enable you to add new features to your applications; adding these features might otherwise have been impossible or might have required extensive development work.
Each of the Extensions Plug-ins packages includes:
To make use of the APIs included in the Extensions Plug-ins, you need to be familiar with the development of Symbian C++ applications for the S60 platform. You need to have a supported S60 SDK installed on your development PC. For the S60 3rd Edition plug-ins, for the APIs you require, extract the content of the appropriate Extensions Plug-ins package to the root folder of your SDK installation. For the S60 5th Edition plug-in, run the installer file. Once this is done, you can access the APIs’ documentation and header files, enabling you to code, compile, and run your application in the SDK emulator and build it for release to devices.
You will also need access to the devices for which you are developing your application so that you can test the validity of the APIs on your targeted devices.
