Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) refers to the capability of routing voice conversations over IP-based networks, such as the Internet. VoIP has rapidly expanded from the PC-driven experience to mobile networks. Mobile VoIP can use any IP bearer, such as home and office WiFi networks or telecom networks. The S60 platform supports the use of mobile VoIP services and the creation of related applications. Also selected Series 40 devices are shipping with VoIP client.

There are two main alternatives for using VoIP services with S60 3rd Edition mobile devices: create a stand-alone VoIP client with Symbian C++, or configure the Nokia SIP VoIP client to work with IETF SIP servers.

This allows a quick route to market.
