Session Initiation Protocol

SIP (Session Initiation Protocol) is a signaling protocol for typical mobile applications such as Internet conferencing, telephony, presence, events notification, and instant messaging. It connects the mobile device or any kind of client with the server. SIP has initially been developed and proposed within the IETF MMUSIC (Multiparty Multimedia Session Control) working group. Several wireless technical forums, such as 3GPP, 3GPP2 and MWIF, have agreed on SIP as the basis of the session management of the mobile Internet.

SIP ensures an integrated IP environment for mobile devices. As a protocol, it is standardized by the IETF (Internet Engineering Task Force), while 3GPP is standardizing the way SIP is used in mobile networks.

In mobile networks, SIP find-and-connect functionality is provided by IP Multimedia Subsystem (IMS). IMS has been defined in 3GPP Release 5 standard, providing the mobile operators a common and well standardised platform for deploying SIP applications. Leading operators are preparing for commercial deployment of SIP applications.

Nokia has been very active in the development of the 3GPP Release 5 standard. This is of strategic importance for enabling new services as well as for reducing the cost of deploying new communication services in existing networks.

Video Sharing

Video sharing enriches voice calls through sharing live or prerecorded video clips between peer-to-peer devices, based on standards of the Third-Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) and Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF). It utilizes SIP (Session Initiation Protocol) for session management.

The primary use case for video sharing is to enrich a voice call through the sharing of live video or a prerecorded video clip. Therefore, simultaneous circuit switched (CS) and packet switched (PS) connections for voice and video are needed. This is achieved in GERAN networks with DTM. WCDMA networks inherently support simultaneous CS and PS connections. more »
