Nokia AV is a 2.5-mm or 3.5-mm analog interface providing stereo audio out and video out to standard audio accessories and consumer electronics (home stereos, TV, car stereos, etc.).

The Nokia AV 2.5mm/3.5mm interface is available in various Nokia devices, including low-end Series 30 devices, Series 40 devices, S60 devices, and Nokia Internet Tablets. All Nokia AV devices, such as the Nokia N810 Internet Tablet, support headset and audio out and some devices, including the Nokia N95, Nokia N95 8GB, and the Nokia N82, provide also composite video out.

The “Enhancement not supported” note is shown when an older version of a 2.5-mm analogue Nokia headset (for example, HDD-1, HS-15, HDC-5, HDE-2, HDB-5, HS-7, or HS-14, used in, for example, the Nokia 1112, Nokia 2310, Nokia 2610, Nokia 3500 Classic, Nokia 6030, Nokia 6600, or the Nokia 7280) is connected to Nokia AV, or when Nokia proprietary accessory communication fails or data is not supported.

Main features:

  • Stereo audio out, for example, to a home entertainment system.
  • Composite PAL/NTSC video signal out displaying the screen of the mobile device; for example, for TV (PAL/NTSC, normal/widescreen can be selected from Tools > Settings > General > Enhancement > TV-out).
  • The dial button in the headset answers and disconnects the call. This is implemented by connecting the microphone to the ground.
  • Voice dial is activated by keeping the dial button pressed for 2 seconds. Voice dial is not implemented in all devices.
  • Nokia devices accept mono microphone signal in from an external accessory if it is automatically detected as a headset.
  • It is possible to use FM radio when an audio non-shielded headphone or headset is connected to device. Not all phones have FM radio.

Main use cases:

  • Headphones: Stereo 3.5-mm/2.5-mm, 3-pole, left-right-ground type of headphones (2x earpieces, no microphone but longer ground on the jack).
  • Open cable: 3.5-mm/2.5-mm, 4-pole, left-right-video-ground cable that is not connected to the TV.
  • Basic headset (headphones + microphone + optional button): 2.5-mm or 3.5-mm, 4-pole connector, left-right-mic-ground, stereo headphones and microphone; optional button that connects the microphone line to the ground (used for call answering, call termination, and voice dialing)..
  • Composite video cable/CVBS: 3.5-mm, 4-pole, left-right-video-ground connector.
  • Adaptor cable: 3.5-mm->2.5-mm or 2.5-mm->3.5-mm, 4-pole adapter; the adapter can be used for any of the use cases above.

Nokia AV connector pin layout and functions

The Nokia AV connector is fully compliant with the OMTP "Wired Analog Audio" specification. The OMTP specification defines the 4-pin pin out, hands-free functionality, and the 3.5-mm/2.5-mm sizes for analog audio connectivity. The Nokia AV Connector is used in Nokia devices for GSM and WCDMA market areas. Nokia CDMA devices do not support Nokia AV.

The Nokia AV connector is based on a 2.5-mm or 3.5-mm 4-pole connector; see picture:

Ring 1 (4)
Ring 2 (3)
Sleeve (1&2)

The function of the connector poles is explained in picture below.
