For you as a developer, S60 5th Edition paves the way for the next generation in mobile content and application opportunities.

For Symbian C++ developers

S60 5th Edition offers touch to your existing applications, with new UI APIs to further enhance user interaction. A new Sensor API also opens up exciting possibilities for innovative experiences, with access to accelerometers and future sensor technology.

To find out more about the new UI features offered by touch and the UI APIs, watch the S60 5th Edition Touch UI: Development and APIs webinar. There have also been significant improvements to the documentation, with a dedicated S60 5th Edition C++ Developer’s Library.

You can now also take advantage of developer tools such as on-device debugging, drag‑and‑drop UI design, and performance testing because the latest version of Carbide.c++ is free of charge to all users. Of interest for S60 5th Edition development will be the migration rules in CodeScanner, which help ensure applications make optimal use of the UI APIs in the touchscreen environment.

For web developers

In addition to continued support for the class-leading Web Browser for S60, S60 5th Edition expands its web capabilities by enabling WRT widget to offer websites and web services access to device data using Platform Services. JavaScript™ APIs enable widgets to use the application manager; S60 application data (Calendar, Contacts, Logs, Messaging [SMS and MMS]); device location and landmarks; system information; and sensors.

For more information, consult the Web Developer’s Library.

For Flash Lite from Adobe developers

Flash Lite applications also gain access to device information through the same Platform Services offered to widget developers. This enables applications to access calendar and contacts records and determine a device’s location. S60 5th Edition includes Flash Lite 3, which offers support for Flash video.

For more information, read S60 5th Edition: What’s New for Developers and watch for the forthcoming update to the Flash Lite Developer’s Library.
