The Nokia 5800 Navigation Edition, a new version of the Nokia 5800 mobile device, comes with a lifetime license for voice-guided Walk and Drive navigation, easy access to Ovi Maps software, full regional maps, and easy zooming. Based on the S60 5th Edition platform, the device features a 3.2-inch touch-screen display supporting both stylus and finger touch, stereo speakers, 35 hours of playback time, a 3.2 megapixel autofocus camera with Carl Zeiss optics, and up to 16 GB of user memory (enough for 12,000 songs). The Nokia 5800 Navigation Edition will ship in the third quarter and retail for 285 euros.

The Nokia N97 mini device, a companion to the successful Nokia N97 multimedia device, is a smaller S60 5th Edition mobile computer with stainless steel cues; tilting 3.2-inch display with nHD colour display, touch screen, and tactile feedback; slide-out full messaging keyboard; and fully customizable homescreen. The Nokia N97 mini device also features an accelerometer, built-in A-GPS navigation, Nokia Maps 2.0, 5-megapixel camera with Carl Zeiss optics, up to 16 GB of user memory, and a music player capable of 28 hours of playback time. With direct access to Ovi Store, the Nokia X6 device also brings 20 friends and virtual communities, including Facebook, to the home screen. It also includes Comes With Music for unlimited free downloads from the Nokia Music Store. Other features are a 5-megapixel camera with Carl Zeiss optics, mini DVD, and built-in stereo speakers. It can deliver up to 26 hours of music-playback time. The Nokia X3 device will ship in the fourth quarter and retail for 115 euros.

And the Nokia Bluetooth Stereo Headset BH-505 is an ergonomic, lightweight neckband headset with noise-cancelling technology that reduces up to 99 per cent of background noise.

You're Invited: Join the Ovi for Developers Beta Programme

Five-hundred lucky developers will have an opportunity to preview Nokia's new Ovi APIs and Ovi SDK Beta by joining the Ovi for developers beta programme. What's more, the applications they create with Ovi SDK Beta and Ovi APIs will be distributed through Ovi Store, which reaches millions of consumers around the world, starting in 2010.

Developers who register and are approved for the programme will have access these Ovi tools:

Ovi SDK Beta: This easy-to-use, Web-based tool provides integrated Ovi features and a distinct user interface to create applications for both the Web and the Symbian and maemo platforms. Key features include Ovi APIs and user interface (UI) libraries, which help developers create rich applications easily. For further ease of use, the Ovi SDK Beta employs standard, familiar Web technologies, including HTML, CSS, and JavaScript.

Ovi APIs: These APIs provide developers with simple ways to integrate features and functionality, such as maps and navigation, into their Web applications. To start, Nokia has introduced two Ovi APIs:

  • Ovi Maps Player API: Introduced earlier in the year, this API brings maps to mobile and Web applications. It is powered by NAVTEQ and features more than 180 country maps, location-based search, and detailed place information. Also included are vector-based maps that give a range of views, including map, terrain, and 3D modes for dynamic map mash-ups.
  • Ovi Navigation Player API: This lets developers bring Nokia's industry-leading Walk and Drive navigation features to their applications, including pedestrian navigation, turn-by-turn car navigation, and route planning.

Apply today to join the Ovi for developers beta programme.

Introducing Nokia's First Mini-Laptop, the Booklet 3G

Nokia's first mini-laptop computer, the Nokia Booklet 3G, is powered by an Intel Atom processor and runs the Windows OS. The Booklet 3G delivers up to 12 hours of battery life, weighs just 1.25 kilograms (2 pounds, 12 ounces), and folds to a height of only 2 centimetres (0.8 inches). Features include Wi-Fi connectivity, 3G, HD video port, integrated Bluetooth, 10-inch display, and built-in A-GPS navigation. The Nokia Booklet 3G also brings several rich Ovi experiences to life, including access and playback of millions of tracks through the Nokia Music Store, using Ovi Suite to sync seamlessly from Nokia smartphones to the mini-laptop to the cloud. The Nokia Booklet 3G will ship in the fourth quarter and will retail for 575 euros.

Ovi Store, A Global Platform with Local Relevance

In his opening keynote at Nokia World 09, Nokia CEO Olli Pekka Kallasvuo noted that Ovi Store already connects developers from 65 countries to active users from more than 180 countries using 100 different Nokia devices.

Today the global Ovi service builds excitement with local content, language, and mobile billing for eight countries in five languages. By year's end, three more languages will be supported — Portuguese, French, and simplified Chinese — for localised content and language services in Brazil, France and China. Mobile billing will be available this year for select French operators, too. And by the second quarter of next year, Ovi Store plans to offer localised language, content, and billing in more than 20 markets worldwide.

The global Ovi Store platform is geared for local relevance, and it is gaining traction. The average registered user of Ovi Store has downloaded more than six items. During August, users downloaded nearly twice as many apps and services as they did in June and July combined. The number of new users in August was also nearly double that of June and July combined. And the average sale price of Ovi Store content is double what Ovi Store planners had originally anticipated.

Ovi Store offers mobile apps, games, videos, podcasts, productivity tools, location-based services (LBS), and much more. Beginning in the fourth quarter, Ovi Store will ship embedded in most new Nokia S60 and Series 40 devices.

S60 5th Edition C++ Developer's Library v2.1
The S60 5th Edition C++ Developer's Library is an integrated package of information for developers wishing to use the S60 platform to develop mobile C++ applications and services for S60 5th Edition devices. See the Change history and release notes section of the library for details on library updates.
Qt for S60 Examples
This package contains five basic Qt for S60 example applications that demonstrate a simple UI, the creation of dynamically linked libraries (DLLs), active object integration, the use of signals and slots, and the use of wrapper classes to get access to Symbian C++ APIs (for example, SMS). The applications can be compiled, using either the Carbide.c++ 2.02 IDE or the command line, for the S60 emulator and compatible S60 devices (from S60 3rd Edition, Feature Pack 1 onwards). They are tested with Qt for S60 4.5.2. Tower release.
Qt for S60 QPlugin Example
This Qt C++ example application demonstrates how to extend an application with Qt plug-ins. This involves defining a common Qt plug-in interface in the GUI application and implementing media plug-ins for S60 devices. The plug-ins are installed separately, after which the client application detects installed plug-ins and content specific to plug-ins is searched for. QPlugins can be used already from S60 3rd Edition, FP1 onwards. However, with the Qt for S60 4.5.2 Tower release, the application UI has been tested to work better on S60 5th Edition touch UI devices. The QPlugin example is based on the DesktopServices example published in the Qt for S60 4.5.2 Tower release. Important classes: QDesktopServices, QMainWindow.
Qt for S60: QMemoryGame Example
This Qt C++ example application demonstrates how to implement the Qt UI on top of an existing Open C++ engine that was initially developed for the Open C++ Memory Game Example published on Forum Nokia. The example has been tested to work on S60 3rd Edition and 5th Edition devices with Qt for S60 4.5.2 Tower release. It supports both keypad and touch UI. Important classes: QGraphicsPixmapItem, QGraphicsScene, QMainWindow.

New Tools and SDKs:

Open C/C++ Plug-in
The Open C/C++ plug-in provides developers with access to a comprehensive range of standard C/C++ libraries for use on the S60 platform.
Extensions Plug-in 1.1 for S60 5th Edition SDK for Symbian OS
This is the Extensions Plug-in 1.1 for S60 5th Edition SDK for Symbian OS. PLEASE NOTICE THE FOLLOWING ISSUES WITH THESE APIs: 1. Nokia is not providing a binary compatibility guarantee for these APIs, neither between platform versions nor within a platform version. 2. You must test your application with each device that the application can be installed on. This is required to ensure the best-possible user experience. To prevent the installation of applications on devices for which they have not been tested, define the Product ID/s (also known as Machine UID) in the .pkg file. More information can be found in the document S60 Platform: Identification Codes, available on the Forum Nokia Web site.
Qt: QSolitaire Game Example
This Qt C++ example application is a cross-platform Solitaire game that runs in different Qt environments such as the S60 platform, Maemo, and desktop Windows. The application uses the Qt Graphics View Framework and SVG graphics for drawing 2D graphics. The application supports touch UI. The application has been tested to work with the Qt for S60 4.5.2 Tower release and Qt for Maemo on the Nokia N900. Important classes: QGraphicsView, QGraphicsSvgItems, QGraphicsScene, QWidget.
