New Example Applications Show S60 Touch UI, Open Source APIs

Developers eager to begin creating touch-enabled applications and content for the new S60 5th Edition now have even more C++ example applications on Forum Nokia. These examples demonstrate additional new features of S60 5th Edition, including the touch UI, tactile feedback, and orientation-awareness. The new example applications include the DBMS, a database management system example that demonstrates the usage of DBMS APIs; SMS, an example that demonstrates programmatical handling of text messages; and image converter, which demonstrates how to use the image conversion library APIs.

Also, three new games examples, all recently published on Forum Nokia, demonstrate how developers with little or no previous knowledge of Symbian OS or S60 APIs can create appealing S60 applications. Developers can use Open C/C++ APIs to develop new applications or port existing open source software application engines in standard C/C++ to the S60 platform. Developers can also use Real-Time Graphics and Audio (RGA) APIs to add rich audio and graphics written in standard C++ to their applications for most S60 3rd Edition devices.

Symbian Foundation Progress Announced at Smartphone Show

At the recent Smartphone Show in London, the Symbian Foundation took the big step of nominating its executive director. Lee Williams (PDF), who was nominated for this new role by the foundation's 10 initial board members, is head of Nokia's S60 Organisation, a role he will maintain until January at least. The Symbian Foundation, announced four months ago, aims to accelerate innovation atop a royalty-free open platform that incorporates the best of Symbian OS, S60, UIQ, and MOAP. Fifty-two companies have announced their support so far, including eight device manufacturers, seven semiconductor companies, and nine mobile network operators.

Deliver the Intelligent Network with Application-Level Roaming

Service Network Access Point (SNAP), a concept introduced in S60 3rd Edition, Feature Pack 2, lets mobile consumers reduce their costs by defining preferred access points and allowing networked applications to roam for available WLAN access points seamlessly. An Access Points example, recently published on Forum Nokia, demonstrates how a third-party application can use the application-level roaming feature. The example application also provides support for traditional Internet access points and access point management features. The application has been tested to support S60 5th Edition and touch UI.

Come Together for Rich Experiences at Adobe MAX

For developers with a passion for Flash, Forum Nokia is planning both in-person and online treats at Adobe MAX sessions in San Francisco (16 – 19 November) and Milan, Italy (1 – 4 December). Adobe MAX is a series of conferences that bring together thousands of developers, designers, industry experts, and business decision-makers involved in creating rich experiences on the devices, the Web, and the desktop. To help developers get up to speed before travelling to Adobe MAX, Forum Nokia will offer Webinars that show how to combine the sizzle of the Flash UI with access to device features. These online discussions bring developers up close and personal with the experts, without having to suffer a single airport terminal.

During the Adobe MAX conferences in Milan and San Francisco, Forum Nokia will host several sessions. Among them: 'Learn About the Nokia Mobile Browser, Flash, and Flash Lite Experience', led by Ung-Ping Tian and Policarpo Guerrero; 'Hands-On: Flash Lite Programming for Nokia Devices', led by Robert Burdick; and 'The Open Screen Project: Delivering Rich Internet Experiences Across Devices', led by Francisco Kattan, Eric John, and others.

During and after the conference, developers will be able to continue the conversation online with Forum Nokia to get the most from their time with presenters from both the Webinars and in-person events.

Forum Nokia Partners with Turkcell, Telenor Playground

Earlier this month Forum Nokia became the preferred partner for mobile developer communities and mobile operators throughout Europe, the Middle East, and Africa (EMEA). Working with Turkcell, the leading mobile operator in Turkey and the third biggest GSM operator in Europe (by number of subscribers), Forum Nokia helped in the creation and launch of the company's application marketplace for Turkcell's more than 35 million subscribers. The application marketplace launched at CeBit EurAsia in Istanbul, the biggest event for consumer electronics in the region. This arrangement will provide valuable exposure to many developers working with Forum Nokia. More than 100 mobile applications from Forum Nokia developers were deployed to the portal at the time of the launch, and more are in the pipeline for public distribution. The available applications cover a broad range of needs, from enterprise-based tools to productivity enhancers and other utilities. There are even categories for hobbies, health, travel, and religion.

Forum Nokia has also agreed to promote applications and services in Playground, the application portal for Telenor Group, which provides mobile communications services to more than 150 million subscribers in 12 countries in Europe and Asia. Telenor Group uses the Playground portal to select and deploy new applications and services in its markets.

Forum Nokia Creates 'Kung Fu Fighting' Widget for Pepsi Latin America

Forum Nokia and Pepsi Latin America have collaborated to produce a 'Kung Fu Fighting' widget. The software application, based on the 1974 song of the same name, lets mobile users play a game, view exclusive media, and link to the Pepsi Web site through supported Nokia devices. The widget, designed by one of Forum Nokia's mobile platform developers, AgencyNet, supports a new Pepsi TV commercial. The TV spot features modern remakes of the 'Kung Fu Fighting' song by reggae star Shaggy and hip-hop's T-Pain, along with Jamaican female recording artist Tami Chynn and comedic actor Verne Troyer (best known for playing Mini-Me in the movie 'Austin Powers'). Pepsi Latin America initially approached Nokia to find ways to extend its brand beyond the boundaries of conventional media and reach a broader audience, offering exclusive content and themes through Nokia's mobile platforms.

Take the Developer Survey — You Could Win a Nokia E90 Communicator

Watch your e-mail for a special invitation to participate in a developer services survey that will shape the future direction of Forum Nokia's technical developer services. This survey, intended for developers and other professional users of Forum Nokia, should take only 10 to 15 minutes to complete. And because developers' opinions are important to Forum Nokia, everyone who completes the survey will be automatically entered in a drawing for a chance to win one of two Nokia E90 Communicators. The survey remains open until 12 November.

Innovate, Collaborate, Accelerate with Symbian Partner Network

Symbian Ltd.'s recently-launched Symbian Partner Network (SPN) stands ready to help mobile developers innovate more easily, collaborate more closely with the Symbian ecosystem, and accelerate development with Symbian OS. Members of SPN receive access to the Symbian OS Binary Access Kit; Symbian's private developer network portal, SDN++; exclusive wikis; a dedicated request management system; and collaboration zones. Members also receive early access to technology roadmaps, enhanced marketing and business-development opportunities (including admission to the annual Symbian Partner Event), discounts on books, quarterly Webcasts, and more.

Collaborate more closely with SPN.

Featured Tool: Location-Based Services

Location-based services (LBS) are hot. Recent surveys find that over half of all mobile consumers want devices with navigation, and six of the nine most-wanted consumer mobile applications (beyond voice) are location-related. Operators are aggressively rolling out location-based services, including navigation, friend-finding services, and real-time traffic information. Among developers, roughly 75% see immediate opportunities for commercial LBS applications, and nearly 60% plan to incorporate location information into their applications, finds a Nokia survey. Nokia is ready with an unmatched ecosystem for creating mobile LBS applications, including location UIs, a map and navigation framework, location acquisition interface, and more. Nokia Maps, for example, is the company's navigation platform for mobile operating systems. But there are still many opportunities for creative new content and applications. Forum Nokia intends to support developers with LBS tools, code examples, technical assistance, and more.

Developer Spotlight: Citrix Delivers Secure Enterprise to S60 3rd Edition

Mobile workers have long dreamed of tapping into corporate data and applications at any time, from any location. That dream moved one step closer to reality with the release of Citrix's XenApp Client for S60 3rd Edition devices. This application lets mobile users deliver enterprise-level applications to their smartphones, including apps based on SAP and Oracle data repositories, as well as productivity suites such as Microsoft Office. XenApp users can also securely access and edit enterprise data and documents without needing to download documents or applications to the phone. Corporate IT departments benefit, too, because they are freed from spending time or effort on customising those applications to work on S60 3rd Edition devices; nor do they need to set up any special security software for accessing data. Citrix, a member of the Forum Nokia PRO premium program, received test devices from Forum Nokia, and its engineers participated frequently on the PRO discussion areas to see how others handled S60 programming.

See how Citrix brings secure enterprise apps to S60 3rd Edition devices.
