Nokia Introduces the N810 Internet Tablet, Provides Maemo Support

This week Nokia introduced the Nokia N810 Internet Tablet, which is based on the open-source Internet Tablet OS. The Nokia N810 features a touch-screen user interface; connectivity via wireless, Bluetooth 2.0, and high-speed USB technologies; 256 MB of Flash memory plus 128 MB of RAM; two memory-card readers; up to 12 days of standby battery life; full messaging keyboard; and integrated global positioning systems (GPS).

To accompany the device introduction, Forum Nokia is helping developers get started with a computer architecture platform called maemo. Maemo is built on desktop open-source components — including the GNU/Linux OS — and is the basis for the Nokia N810's Internet Tablet OS. A maemo SDK is now available for Linux-based PCs; with a VMware image, it can run on other systems, too. Nokia is also hosting maemo.org, an open source community site. And Forum Nokia offers maemo technical support, consulting, documentation, training, tools, and more.

Test Web Run-Time Widgets with New S60 SDK Beta

Nokia has released a beta version of the SDK for S60 3rd Edition, Feature Pack 2, including a version of the Web Run-Time (WRT) testing environment. Other new features in the beta version include standard C library support, easier porting of existing standard C applications to S60 3rd Edition; support for widgets, lightweight Web applications developed using standards-based Web technologies such as HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and AJAX; enhanced emulator startup speed; platform UID; new APIs; and a middle softkey. The SDK beta also includes several new application examples, including DataMobility, ListBox, and RichTextEditor.

S60 Platform Gains Touch Interface

At this week's Symbian Smartphone Show in London, Nokia introduced a touch user interface (UI) for the S60 platform. The S60 touch UI offers developers the opportunity to create applications and content that use a variety of input methods, including touch screens with traditional keypads, touch screens with full messaging keyboards, and touch screens with finger or stylus input. All existing S60 3rd Edition applications will run on touch-enabled devices without modification. Also, Nokia soon plans to offer tools that will help developers optimize the touch experience of their S60 applications and content.

Nokia to Buy Navteq, Leading Location-Based-Services Vendor

In a move aimed at boosting its mobile services offerings, earlier this month Nokia agreed to acquire Navteq, a leading provider of location based services (LBS), for approximately $8.1 billion. Navteq's offerings include comprehensive digital map information for automotive navigation systems, mobile navigation devices, Internet-based mapping applications, and government and business solutions. Navteq also owns Traffic.com, an interactive service that provides traffic information and content to consumers. Nokia expects the acquisition will bolster its LBS offerings, which currently include the GPS-enabled Nokia N95 multimedia computer.

Get Mobileware Help from the New Forum Nokia Intellisync Zone

Forum Nokia has introduced the Intellisync Zone to provide a wide variety of information in a readily accessible Web portal and make mobileware development significantly easier. The Forum Nokia Intellisync Zone offers an additional opportunity to learn about Nokia Intellisync mobileware and how it can assist solution development, whether for internal use or by third parties. By providing lists of different business models detailing varied situations, the Intellisync Zone facilitates the go-to-market phase of independent software vendors, systems integrators, and other development partners. Forum Nokia Intellisync Zone also offers developer instructions and tools, APIs, patented synchronization engine and sample user interfaces, and several code examples on how to build mobileware applications.

Learn Flash Lite Development with with "Creative Class" Community

Web designers and developers who use Adobe Flash Lite have a new online community in which to explore exciting business opportunities in mobility. This online community, launched recently by Forum Nokia, is called Creative Class. The site has been designed to help the Adobe Flash community and other Web design and development professionals with Flash Lite documentation, tools, code, news, discussion boards, blogs, and more. Also, Nokia announced its support for Adobe Flash Lite 3 as part of a strategy to deliver a unified Web experience for mobile and PC users. With this announcement, Nokia provides a way for Flash developers and designers to optimize existing Flash content for the latest Nokia mobile devices.

Introducing a Powerful Resource for Power Management

Working with power management? Forum Nokia has introduced a Power Management portal that can help. The new Web section provides recommendations for efficient power management; it also offers links to documents, guides, code examples, and analyzer tools.

Power management help couldn't be timelier. The latest Nokia devices are equipped with large color displays, multimegapixel cameras, radio transmitters, advanced multimedia, and other features. Yet battery capacity cannot always keep up with the increased power consumption these features bring.

Developer Spotlight: eHIT's Personal Healthcare System

A mobile electrocardiogram (ECG) telecardiology system (PDF), based on S60 technology and created jointly by eHIT Ltd. of Finland and AnalyzeYou Inc. of Japan, helps users determine whether or not they are having heart attacks. The eHIT system includes a matchbook-sized wireless ECG sensor, which is worn by the patient. The ECG transmits data via a Bluetooth technology interface to the S60 device. The eHIT application collects ECG data and peak-to-peak values for about 10,000 heart beats to establish the heart's activity. That data is then fed through the AnalyzeYou algorithm, and the results are sent to the patient's doctor for further analysis. The solution was rolled out in Japan in September, using the Nokia E61 mobile device; availability in other countries is planned soon and could include other S60 devices, both 2nd Edition and 3rd Edition. Also, eHIT is a member of Forum Nokia Launchpad, Nokia's new resource for mobile developers.

New Book on Mobile Services Builds on MobiLife Research

A complete architectural framework for mobile services is described in a new book edited by a Nokia researcher and based on a Nokia-sponsored research collaboration to develop mobile services for everyday life. The book, Enabling Technologies for Mobile Services: The MobiLife Book, was edited by Mika Klemettien of the Nokia Research Center. The basis for the book is research coordinated by Nokia and conducted at MobiLife from 2004 to 2006 as part of the Wireless World Initiative, a joint effort involving 22 organizations from nine EU countries.
