Series 40 6th Edition Gets a Boost with First SDK, Great New Phone

Nokia recently enhanced Series 40 6th Edition by announcing a new feature phone, the Nokia 6260 slide and also releasing the software development kit (SDK) for the platform.

Series 40 6th Edition devices support Adobe's Flash Lite 3.0 for delivery of rich graphical mobile content, and it now includes the Java™ platform-based location API (JSR-179) for new navigation and context-based services for the consumer mass market. The 6260 slide includes an HVGA resolution screen and on-board global positioning system (GPS).

Along with the 7510 Supernova, the 6260 slide includes the Nokia WebKit Open Source Browser that lets mobile content and service providers target Series 40 feature phones with full Web look and feel. WebKit Browser features include the pointer user interface, incremental page rendering, page overview, and visual history browsing, and the user-favorite minimap browsing that allows for easy screen navigation of full-size Web pages.

The new Series 40 6th Edition SDK provides a complete environment for application development, testing, and debugging tools to bring these exciting technologies to devices for consumer markets worldwide. The SDK also provides Java class libraries, APIs (including the Nokia UI API), documentation, and a device emulator for testing Java, Flash Lite, and browser content.

The new Nokia 6260 slide is designed for people who use mobile devices to share their lives with friends and family. Consumers can use the phone not only to make voice calls, but to share photographs and videos, check social networks, and be guided to restaurants and other social gatherings. The device, based on Nokia's new Series 40 6th Edition, features high-speed uploads (HSUPA) and downloads (HSDPA), a 5-megapixel camera with Carl Zeiss optics, music player, video recorder and player, WebKit open source Web browser, up to 8 gigabytes of user memory, Wi-Fi connectivity, Nokia Maps navigation, assisted GPS (a first for the Series 40 platform), and a new 360-degree navi-key. Shipments of the Nokia 6260 slide will begin in early 2009, and the device will retail for 299 euros.

Forum Nokia's Website: Redesigned with You in Mind

To better serve the worldwide developer community, the Forum Nokia site has just been redesigned from the ground up. New upgrades to the site include improved navigation, easier content discovery, contextually relevant resources, and new opportunities for engagement and interaction.

One of the first things that you will notice on the new website is its goal-driven navigation scheme. On the site's home page, there is a section labeled 'I Want To ...' that encourages exploration of content based on the type of task you are trying to accomplish, such as: 'I want to develop applications' or 'I want to get design ideas'. Other pages include a 'Recommended Resources' link in the right-hand navigation, which connects developers with relevant information recommended by Forum Nokia. To aid content discovery the site now employs Google search tools. The site also now implements user tagging, including easy posting to social bookmarking sites, including Facebook, Digg, and del.icio.us.

Another big change reflects Forum Nokia's global reach: Visitors can now change the language used in the text of both the top-level tabs and the breadcrumb navigation. A choice of 10 languages is offered, including English, Finnish, German, Russian, and Chinese.

Individuals are encouraged to complete the site's free registration process, which can typically be done in less than one minute. After that, members of Forum Nokia have the opportunity to provide additional information in an optional profile, where they can list their personal goals and interests. There are a couple of immediate benefits from providing this information. Members can make their profiles visible to others, fostering greater collaboration and knowledge sharing among the community. And the selections made in the 'Technologies & Topics of Interest' portion of this optional profile will be used to generate a customised newsfeed that will display on the home page of Forum Nokia every time that member is logged in to the website. This will ensure that every visit to the site includes content that is personalised, relevant, and easy to access. Members can also subscribe to and view these feeds using their preferred newsreaders.

Members will also be able to provide comments in the form of notes on many of the pages throughout the site, as well as rating the quality of the content using a five-star scale.

New Nokia E63 — Manage Your Personal and Work Life

Nokia recently introduced an Eseries mobile device designed for people who want to manage their work and personal lives from a single device. The new Nokia E63 mobile device can switch modes with a single key press, shifting from personal e-mail, social networking, and favourite blogs and site to business calendars, company intranets, and corporate e-mail. Files on Ovi, a service that provides remote access to desktop PC files, will be featured, too. Other features include a choice of two new colours — ruby red and ultramarine blue — and a range of connectivity options and multimedia services. The Nokia E63 device will retail for 199 euros, and shipping will start by year's end.

Nokia Supports NAVTEQ LBS Challenge with Two Official Devices

The 2009 NAVTEQ Global LBS Challenge is underway, and Nokia is a global sponsor for the fourth consecutive year. This programme challenges developers to build innovative, location-based services (LBS) that work with mobile phones and/or wireless handheld devices using dynamic positioning technology and NAVTEQ maps. To help, Forum Nokia is providing all qualified contestants with development tools, SDKs, device emulators, and devices necessary to create location-aware applications for S60 3rd Edition devices, running on Symbian OS.

For developers in the Americas who reach the semifinals there will be two official Nokia devices to choose from: The Nokia E71 mobile device, based on S60 3rd Edition, Feature Pack 1, is the slimmest smartphone with a full messaging keyboard. And the Nokia 6650 multimedia computer, based on S60 3rd Edition, Feature Pack 2, features a 2-megapixel camera; AT&T Navigator, AT&T Video Share, AT&T Mobile Music, and a brushed metal fold design that's available in either silver or red.

But hurry: The registration deadline for developers in the Americas region is 5 December. And for developers in the Asia-Pacific region (APAC) the deadline is 13 February.

More Developers Selected for Forum Nokia Innovation Series

Nine mobile developers from Asia and Europe were recently added to the Forum Nokia Innovation Series, which provides business and market support to small and mid-sized developers. As part of the programme the developers will be featured in video demonstrations created by Forum Nokia and hosted on popular video-sharing sites. The developers join an earlier group of six developers from North America and two from Europe.

To qualify, the developers had to clear a selection process that included internal Nokia reviews and screening by international focus groups. The new members of the Forum Nokia Innovation Series, and their winning applications, are:
  • Adtronic from Liquid Air Lab: Offers ad banners on mobile devices for opt-in consumers. For every banner shown, advertisers collect 'ad points' that can be converted into incentives or cash.
  • Kuneri Lite from Kuneri Ltd.: A rapid application development toolkit that helps developers extend Flash Lite capabilities and create S60 applications without needing any Symbian knowledge.
  • Maverick Secure Mobile from Maverick Mobile Solutions: Protects confidential data on a mobile device and tracks the device if lost or stolen.
  • Mobile Unified Communications from Divitas: Combines corporate voice and messaging — including desk phone, instant messaging, presence, and push-to-talk — on a single mobile device under IT's control.
  • Mobiola Webcam and Video Studio from Shape Services: Moves and converts Web videos to mobile devices with a simple drag-and-drop of the mouse.
  • Total NAVI from Navitime Japan: Offers point-to-point navigation for mobile devices using a variety of transportation alternatives, including ferries and airplanes.
  • Voice Reminder from One View Systems: Tracks users' important events with voice and text notifications.
  • WaveSecure from tenCube: Protects users' mobile data, privacy, and S60 devices.
  • WHERE from uLocate Communications: A platform for location-aware consumer widgets, it lets developers write in their preferred programming languages and assemble applications on mobile devices.
Get innovative with the Forum Nokia Innovation Series.
