New Nokia N82 Multimedia Device Optimized for Photos

Nokia recently announced the Nokia N82 multimedia device, a multimedia computer optimized for photography, navigation, and Internet connectivity. Based on the S60 3rd Edition, Feature Pack 1, platform, the Nokia N82 features two cameras, one of them a 5-megapixel unit with Carl Zeiss optics, Xenon flash, auto-focus, and red-eye reduction. On the navigation front, the Nokia N82 features A-GPS and preinstalled Nokia Maps; the standard sales package includes a free trial of voice-guided navigation, and consumers can also purchase city guides and other navigation features. For Internet connectivity, the Nokia N82 connects with mobile broadband via either wireless LANs or HSDPA (3.5G) for faster-than-3G downloads. Other Nokia N82 features include a 16M color display with QVGA (240 x 320 pixels) resolution, 3D stereo speakers, and connectors for compatible TV sets.

Create Mobile Widgets with Web Run-Time for S60 Devices

Web Run-Time is a great new way for developers of Web services to reach a mobile audience easily. Web Run-Time is essentially a "widget engine" that executes small applications, known as widgets, that typically front-end a Web 2.0 service or other Internet content. Developers who wish to offer widgets on the S60 3rd Edition, Feature Pack 2 platform can now download an upgraded version of the Time API reference, as well as an SDK and other documentation from Forum Nokia. The API reference describes standard JavaScript functions, meaning that Web developers can create widgets now, with no learning required. Further, Nokia will include the Web Run-Time widget engine in generally available mobile devices in the coming months.

New Features in RDA: Widget Support and Data SIMs

Thanks to a special Forum Nokia arrangement, some Nokia devices connected to the Remote Device Access (RDA) have special firmware versions that include Web Run-Time for widgets. While these are firmware versions are not final, developers can use them for beta testing — though they should be aware that there may be some underlying issues and missing features. In addition, Nokia has installed Data SIM cards in some of the devices. These cards enable the use of wireless data, incoming calls, and incoming messages. This improvement enables more testing with important use-cases.

Test your widgets on real Nokia hardware with RDA.

Visual Studio: Build Symbian Apps with Carbide.vs 3.0

Nokia recently introduced Carbide.vs 3.0. It's a set of development tools that Visual Studio developers can use to create applications and content for Symbian OS devices. More specifically, Carbide.vs 3.0 enables efficient Symbian OS C++ application development using the Microsoft Visual Studio.NET 2005 IDE and Symbian OS SDKs. Carbide.vs 3.0 also offers wizards and other automated functions that integrate with Visual Studio 2005. In addition, the new toolset contains functionality to automate several development tasks specific to Symbian OS.

With this announcement, Forum Nokia now supports two versions of Carbide.vs: the new version, Carbide.vs 3.0, which works with Visual Studio 2005, and the older version, Carbide.vs 2.0.1, which supports Visual Studio 2003.
