Location-based services (LBS) are applications that leverage the user's physical location to provide an enhanced service or experience. Location awareness can be used for navigation and mapping, workforce tracking, finding points of interest, getting weather information, and more. Location awareness also differentiates mobile applications from traditional PC and wired Internet services. This month Forum Nokia is promoting LBS technology with new documents, success cases, Code Camps, and more. Here's a preview.

Nokia is introducing a development environment using Scalable Vector Graphics (SVG) to enable graphic designers to implement their user interface designs directly in a Java application project.
Nokia, working with rich-media SVG company Ikivo, has created a complete tool chain that lets graphic designers and developers collaborate as equal partners in developing Java applications with rich, animated user interfaces for mobile devices. The tool solution uses SVG — a royalty-free, vendor-neutral open standard for describing 2D static and animated vector graphics developed through the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) — to capture visual designs in a form that integrates effectively into Java software development projects. Nokia supports SVG for Java development through its implementation of JSR-226 on Series 40 devices starting from Series 40 3rd Edition, Feature Pack 1 and on S60 devices starting from S60 3rd Edition, Feature Pack 1.
A new Forum Nokia screencast demonstrates the creation of a simple Java application using the SVG features of NetBeans 6.0. It also provides an introduction to creating suitable graphics using Adobe Illustrator and Ikivo Animator.

Nokia recently launched SNAP Mobile SDK 2.0, an updated version of a free SDK that developers can use when creating connected mobile games on the Java platform. SNAP Mobile is an end-to-end programming platform for mass-market mobile game implementation, and it is already deployed globally. The SDK targets all Java platform, Micro Edition (Java ME) devices that conform to the MIDP 2.0 and CLDC 1.1 specifications. It also provides a completely new design for the SNAP Mobile API, offering the same rich feature set as the earlier API but with an all-new, object-oriented interface that makes game development on the Java platform simple and intuitive. The SDK ships with several development tools, including a complete emulation environment of back-end servers, which makes it easier to write and debug games.

Nokia recently expanded its S60 Web Runtime (WRT) offering, allowing the creation of personal and context-aware widgets. Nokia believes this expanded WRT feature could change the economics of mobile software development by allowing anyone with Web development experience to create powerful mobile applications in just days, even hours. Developers can also make Internet services more powerful and relevant for users by adding personal data, such as using GPS to show a user's location.
Also, Nokia is expanding its support of open source innovation through Open C++. The company has brought the Standard Template Library and other popular platform-independent C++ libraries to the S60 platform, extending the Open C offering announced last year.
Create powerful mobile applications with the expanded S60 Web Runtime offering.
To provide developers with guidance, best practices, and tools that enable efficient application development and optimized user experience, Forum Nokia has created a new user experience portal. Topics covered on the portal include quality, usability and user experience, power management, testing and signing, and porting. Developers who study and apply this information can gain a competitive edge and produce the next generation of outstanding mobile applications.
Gain your competitive edge with Forum Nokia's new user experience portal.
Developers can now continue the conversations they began at JavaOne, regardless of whether they are receiving this newsletter at the conference or back at home or the office. This new Forum Nokia JavaOne blog offers links to conference presentations and discussion board threads on mobile Java technology. Also, a special "Talk to the Guru" session will let developers chat with experts from Nokia, NAVTEQ, and uLocate to discuss the next generation in location-based services on Friday, May 9, at 9 a.m. PDT/6 p.m. CEST.
Check out the JavaOne blog and participate in the "Talk to the Guru" session.
This month Forum Nokia is offering developers a powerful way to share their thoughts about the community. Tom Libretto, the new VP of Forum Nokia, is participating on the discussion boards to answer questions from Forum Nokia members. Tom is also open to receiving suggestions for ways to make Forum Nokia even more useful to the developer community. Here's a chance for developers to affect their futures directly.

What do you get when you combine location-based services, social networking, and an S60 device? One possibility is GyPSii, a location-based social-networking platform designed for mobile devices. Announced earlier this year, GyPSii is now available for S60 mobile devices.
GyPSii takes three core capabilities — user-generated content, friend-finding, and proximity-based search — and consolidates them in a single mobile user interface. The GyPSii platform also includes a Web-based service that consumers can use at home or the office. "We're connecting people with places and networks," says Shane Lennon, senior VP of strategy and marketing at Amsterdam-based GyPSii. Already GyPSii has signed distribution deals with mobile operators in China and India. Forum Nokia is helping with loaner devices, assistance on Symbian Signed testing, business development, marketing contacts, and more.

One day, two sessions on a pair of today's key mobile technologies: Flash Lite 3.0 and location-based services (LBS). The Flash Lite 3.0 session will combine speaker presentations with a hands-on coding camp to help you explore Flash Lite from Adobe on the S60 platform. Here's some of what this session holds in store: an overview of Flash Lite on S60; how to package your Flash Lite content as a "real" S60 application; and a hands-on coding session on how to use location-based services with Flash Lite, complete with examples and support from our tutors and Adobe. In the LBS session, we'll get you up to speed on the latest enabling technologies for building location-aware mobile applications and services. Topics will include positioning technologies, POI management, mapping and navigation, and service integration. Check back soon for registration information.
S60 Summit 08 will be an exclusive opportunity to learn what's new with the S60 platform. The event will focus on new S60
