New Nokia N86 8MP Offers 8-Megapixel Camera

Nokia recently announced an Nseries device with an 8-megapixel camera. The Nokia N86 8MP is a slide device based on S60 3rd Edition, Feature Pack 2. The 8-megapixel autofocus camera features a wide-angle Carl Zeiss optics Tessar™ lens and dual LED flash, and it can take videos and still images in both bright and low-light conditions. Consumers can easily geotag their images, then post them to Ovi Share, Flickr, and other sites. Other features include an integrated assisted global positioning system (A-GPS), Nokia Maps, and built-in compass for navigating; 2.6-inch active matrix OLED display with scratch-resistant glass; Flash Lite 3.1; USB charging with simultaneous data transfer; up to 8GB of internal memory, that is expandable with maximum of 16GB microSD card; multiformat music player that supports Nokia's new Bluetooth BH-214 headset; full synch capabilities with PCs and TVs for slide shows; and integrated kick stand for watching videos and playing games. The Nokia N86 8MP will ship in the second quarter and retail for 375 euros.

Full Version of Series 40 6th Edition SDK Now Available

The Series 40 platform SDK has been updated and is now available from Forum Nokia. This latest version of the SDK provides developers with additional support for Series 40 6th Edition platform features. Also, a greater proportion of testing can now be undertaken using the emulator on a PC.

The full version of the Series 40 6th Edition SDK adds many new features, including:
  • Flash Lite Player 3.0 in the emulator — an update to the Flash Lite Player 2.1 of the initial release
  • Content Packs, including collections of copyrighted wallpaper, screensavers, and themes
  • Update of the Advanced Multimedia Supplements (JSR-234) API to v1.1
  • Support for NetBeans 6.5 with Java™ ME pack and Eclipse IDE 3.4.1 with EclipseME 1.7.9 or Eclipse Mobile Tools for Java (MTJ) 0.9.1
Series 40 platform SDKs enable developers to create and test Java applications quickly and efficiently, as well as browser-based, Flash Lite, and multimedia messaging service (MMS) content. Each SDK includes an emulator, Java APIs, documentation, code examples, and debugging tools. These tools are then combined with an integrated development environment (IDE) to create, compile, and package applications and content. Testing can be completed on a PC using the SDK's built-in emulator. Also, the emulator in the Series 40 6th Edition SDK now offers both traditional and simplified Chinese-language support. For details, see the release notes.

The hardware requirements for the Series 40 6th Edition SDK are: a PC running either Windows XP Professional or Vista Business with at least 512 MB of RAM, 1 GHz Pentium-class processor, 150 MB of free disk space, display capable of 16-bit colour at 1,024 x 768 pixel resolution, and local administrator rights for installation and removal of the SDK.

The Series 40 platform is Nokia's most popular line of devices, offering developers access to markets measured in the hundreds of millions of customers. Nokia announced its first Series 40 6th Edition device in June; called the Nokia 7510 Supernova, this device is now shipping through selected operators. Nokia's second device based on the new platform, the Nokia 6260 slide, will ship later this quarter. Two additional Series 40 6th Edition devices, the recently announced Nokia 6700 classic and Nokia 6303 classic, will ship in the second quarter.

Update: Publishing to Ovi

Last month at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, Spain, Nokia announced the new publishing to Ovi solution for developers, a self-service publishing tool that provides developers with an easy way to distribute and monetise their applications and content to millions of consumers using Nokia devices around the world via the new Ovi Store.

With a 70% revenue share*, all of the applications and content distributed through the new Ovi Store will create instant revenue opportunities for the developers involved.

For developers who are working on content and applications for the Ovi Store, accepted media types include: Java, Symbian, and Flash Lite applications; Web Runtime (WRT) widgets; ring tones; themes; and videos. Content categories include: entertainment, social networking, productivity, gaming, news and information, and others.

At the time of launch in early May, the Ovi Store is expected to be available to tens of millions of Nokia devices globally, and it will be localised in nine countries on supported Nokia devices. The service is expected to reach an estimated 300 million consumers by 2012, making it the world's largest media network.

When the Ovi Store launches, more than 60 Nokia devices will be supported. The Nokia N97 multimedia device will be the first device to have Ovi Store pre-installed when it is released in June. All future S60 and Series 40 devices will have the Ovi Store pre-installed, too.

Starting this week developers who have already signed up for the publishing to Ovi service will start to be notified via e-mail about how to register as publishers to Ovi and upload their content to the Ovi Store.

Dedicated and comprehensive resources and support from Forum Nokia are available to help developers get their applications ready for commercial distribution through the Ovi Store.

'Calling All Innovators' Final Winners Announced

Forum Nokia recently announced the final winners of its Calling All Innovators contest for mobile applications and content that help improve the world's quality of life. The winners — honoured at the recent GSMA Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, Spain — were selected from nearly 1,000 entries coming from more than 55 countries. Grand prize winners in the four categories received $25,000 each and will receive help distributing their applications to consumers worldwide; first-place winners received $10,000 each, and second-place winners, $5,000 each.

The next phase of Calling All Innovators will challenge mobile and Web application developers worldwide to submit best-of-breed applications in three categories: Internet Innovation, Flash, and Emerging Markets. Prizes will include cash, the opportunity to demo at Nokia World in September, and Spotlight placement of their winning applications in Nokia's newly announced Ovi Store. The new contest will launch on 13 March.

The latest winners are:

ECO-Challenge category:
  • Grand Prize: GreenDrive. Promotes fuel efficiency by sensing current and impending road conditions that influence fuel consumption and by providing real-time driving directions for the shortest route.
  • First Place: TigerMap. An eco-friendly city guide that combines up-to-the-minute mass transit information with recommendations for the best restaurants, entertainment, hotels, and shopping in more than 150 Chinese cities.
  • Second Place: Ticketek Mobile Ticketing. This Series 40 and S60 electronic-ticketing application reduces paper consumption by letting consumers use barcodes stored on their phones to gain admission to events.
Emerging Markets category:
  • Grand Prize: Nano Ganesh. This application lets Indian farmers contact modem-equipped electric irrigation pumps to check power-supply and pump-operation information remotely.
  • First Place: mPedigree. Lets consumers send free text messages regarding the quality-authentication information on packages of anti-malarial and other medications. This helps guard against counterfeit drugs, believed to be responsible for an alarming number of deaths, especially in the developing world.
  • Second Place: DigitallCS. This application helps agricultural co-ops review the growing practices of their members, then upload the data to a Web site for reporting and analysis. In this way the co-ops can verify the growers' adherence to Fair Trade Certified, Certified Organic, and other standards.
Technology Showcase category:
  • Grand Prize: X Dancery. This application analyzes an MP3 music file to generate a unique, tempo-based game automatically. Fully optimised for S60 5th Edition's touch UI and motion-sensor technology, it also uses advanced 3D-graphics rendering.
  • First Place: kReader Mobile. A multi-language text-to-speech application with cross-language translation capabilities. It uses a phone's camera to digitise a book, letter, receipt, or other printed document, then translates and reads the text out loud.
  • Second Place: Neuscreen. Using the Nokia N95 multimedia device's drawing, touch-screen, and camera functionalities, this application employs a normal TV set to track the motion of a pen light, enable 'virtual' drawing, and project and manipulate images stored on the mobile device.
Meet the winners of the 2008 Calling All Innovators contest.

Nokia Partners with Skype, T-Mobile, Qualcomm

Nokia announced three partnerships at the recent GSMA Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, Spain, that should benefit mobile developers with new opportunities and markets.

Nokia has agreed to work with Skype to integrate its Internet-based voice-calling software on Nokia devices, beginning with the Nseries. Skype software, currently used by more than 400 million people worldwide, enables free and low-cost voice calls via 3G and WLANs, presence (seeing where other Skype users are), and instant messaging. The Nokia N97 multimedia device will be the first Nokia device to ship with integrated Skype software. Shipments of the Skype-enhanced device will start in the third quarter.

T-Mobile and Nokia have agreed to promote widgets, applications, and other content jointly to give customers easy access to a wider range of Internet services. Thanks to a widget based on the Java platform, consumers will be able to browse and download widgets from both T-Mobile's widget gallery and Nokia's Ovi Store using T-Mobile's web'n'walk widget platform. The integrated marketplace will be made available in the second half on Nokia Series 40 devices.

Qualcomm and Nokia have agreed to develop new and advanced UMTS (Universal Mobile Telecommunications System) devices jointly, initially for the North American market. The new devices will be based on both Nokia's S60 platform and Symbian OS, and Qualcomm's MSM (Mobile Station Modem) chipsets. The first devices are expected in mid-2010 and will be compatible with the Symbian Foundation's forthcoming open source platform.

Nokia WRT Plug-In for Aptana Studio Released Commercially

Forum Nokia recently released the commercial version of the free Nokia Web Runtime (WRT) Plug-In for Aptana Studio, following a public beta trial that began in December and involved nearly 5,000 developers. The Nokia WRT Plug-in helps developers create, edit, test, and deploy WRT widgets for Nokia S60 devices. These developers can use either Aptana Studio or Aptana Studio Pro, and they can take advantage of standard Web technologies — including HTML, JavaScript, and CSS — and Ajax libraries. The plug-in can be used on either a PC or Mac, and it can be used to create WRT widgets for any of a long list of WRT-compatible S60 3rd Edition and S60 5th Edition devices.

Symbian Signed Moving to Symbian Foundation

Symbian Signed will soon be managed and owned by the Symbian Foundation. As part of the transfer, all services currently provided by Symbian Signed will be transferred to the Symbian Foundation, and all users will need to allow their account data to be transferred to the Symbian Foundation. To do so, log in to the Symbian Signed site, and select the big button that says 'Consent'. This will ensure that your data remains available through the Symbian Signed site. All your account data will continue to be available when the changes are made. Then, following the transfer of Symbian Signed to the Symbian Foundation, you will need to accept a new set of Terms and Conditions.

Got a question? Ask the Symbian Signed support staff on the Symbian Developer Network discussion board.

Developing Home Screen Widgets

Internet Innovation is a new category in the 2009 Calling All Innovators contest, and ideas for this category are surfacing through Nokia's N97 Widget Design Competition, which invites consumers to submit their best ideas for new widgets to be featured on the touch-enabled Nokia N97 multimedia device. All ideas submitted to the Widget Design Competition will be turned over to Forum Nokia's global developer community. They, in turn, will be able to create Web Runtime widgets for the Internet Innovation portion of Calling All Innovators. In this way, developers will see precisely what consumers want, and they will have the chance to turn those ideas into reality for devices based on both S60 3rd Edition, Feature Pack 2 and S60 5th Edition.

A widget enabled for the home screen of S60 5th Edition devices (such as the new Nokia N97 device) has two views: home screen and full screen. Widget creators must implement a function that determines which view to display. The home screen of the device communicates with the widget when a user interacts with the home screen. Communication between the home screen and the widget occurs at the system level, so it happens automatically.

Get details about the next Calling All Innovators competition.

Browse the Forum Nokia Web Developer's Library, which has been updated to include information on creating WRT widgets for display on the S60 5th Edition home screen.

Developer Spotlight: Liquid Air Lab Delivers S60 Ad Banners

Advertisers want to reach mobile consumers, and adtronic from Liquid Air Lab of Stuttgart, Germany, makes the consumer/advertiser relationship a mutually beneficial one. By viewing ads presented by the adtronic software, users of S60 3rd Edition devices can build up credits that lead to benefits, including cash reductions on their phone bills, free or discounted downloads of applications, and free music downloads. The adtronic software also lets consumers choose how many banner ads they view and which marketing campaigns reach them. Third-party Symbian software developers can monetise their applications and games by bundling them with the adtronic technology and distributing the bundle through their existing channels. Developers can expect to earn more ad revenue, because the ads with incoming calls or messages have a consistently higher frequency than in-application advertising, which is dependent on the individual usage of the host application. Forum Nokia helped Liquid Air Lab get the adtronic platform onto the world stage, in part by linking the company with operators in Europe and the Middle East.
