Forum Nokia recently released Open C/C++ Plug-ins for S60 3rd Edition, which lets developers leverage their desktop C or C++ skills to create new applications and middleware — or to port older desktop applications and middleware — for S60 3rd Edition devices. The Open C/C++ Plug-ins for S60 3rd Edition package includes a plug-in for S60 3rd Edition SDKs, for Symbian OS, for C++, and a set of plug-ins for S60 3rd Edition devices. The plug-ins deliver the headers and libraries that enable application development and testing on a PC and the execution of software on S60 3rd Edition devices. The plug-in package also includes example applications and comprehensive documentation of the APIs.
The Open C/C++ Plug-ins for S60 3rd Edition replace the older Open C plug-ins. The new plug-ins include: various fixes for standard C (Open C) APIs, new standard C++ APIs, and a new Real-Time Graphics and Audio (RGA) API.

At the recent JavaOne conference in San Francisco, the Java Verified team introduced a new R&D Signing Service and Publisher ID requirement. Both will be available in September. The R&D Signing Service will provide a free-of-charge opportunity to sign Java™ Platform, Micro Edition (Java ME) applications for testing purposes. The Publisher ID, akin to a passport to Java Verified services, will cost approximately $200 a year and will be provided by TC Trustcenter. Developers who already have TC Trustcenter Publisher IDs for Symbian Signed can continue using them.

At the recent S60 Summit in Barcelona, Spain, manufacturer Samsung introduced an S60-based phone for business users, Sasken joined the S60 community, and a program for S60 early adopters was launched. Also, Nokia announced that more than 150 million S60 devices had been shipped by all licensees as of this past January. Here are the details:
Samsung's new mobile device, the business-style L870, is based on the S60 platform and features a 2.4-inch QVGA display, 3-megapixel camera, Push e-mail, document viewer/editor, and more. The announcement brings the total number of S60 devices in the marketplace to 79.
Sasken Communication Technologies of Bangalore, India, has joined the S60 Product Creation Community. Sasken offers consulting, products, and services for embedded communications. In addition, Sasken Wireless IP has shipped more than 50 million phones across networks in Australia, China, Europe, Hong Kong, Japan, and Taiwan.
The S60 community launched the S60 Ambassador program to encourage and engage early-adopting consumers to discuss and share information on S60-based products, services, and applications. Members of the Ambassador program can also send feedback to the S60 community.

Get introduced to Python, the open source programming language optimized for rapid application prototyping, with a new Forum Nokia eLearning module. Python is an object-oriented scripting language that is easy to learn and use and is supported on many platforms. The new eLearning module is an introduction to Python that will give students an idea of where and how the language can be used and show how to write Python programs that run on the S60 platform. The eLearning module assumes some familiarity with object-oriented programming languages.

Where in the world are your family members and friends — and are they safe? These urgent questions are addressed by UbiSafe, a new location-based service (LBS) from developer UbiEst S.p.A. of Treviso, Italy. The company's UbiSafe service uses a Java platform-based client for mobile devices that handles personal security, contact locating, and emergency needs. A user of UbiSafe can stay in touch with family members, friends, and people with special needs. UbiSafe also lets the user monitor the real-time location of these contacts on maps. Users monitoring children can also set a geographic radius of security, essentially a safe area they want the child to remain within. If the child moves beyond the designated area, the UbiSafe service sends the adult user an alert in the form of an SMS message to his or her mobile device, then allows the user to call the child or take other actions. UbiSafe recently won the Grand Prize at the 2008 NAVTEQ LBS Challenge, EMEA Edition. "Winning gave us a real measure of the quality and technical value of what we're doing," says Nicola De Mattia, UbiEst's chief executive officer.
