Nokia N79 Gets Sporty and Nokia 7510 Comes to the U.S.

At the recent Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas, Nokia announced that the Nokia 7510 Supernova will be available in the United States exclusively through T-Mobile USA. The Nokia 7510 is a stylish flip phone that offers consumers new levels of customisation and functionality. Based on the Series 40 platform, it features lights that remain hidden until needed to show caller ID, song title, and other information. Also offered are customisable faceplates, which let consumers personalise their devices as often as they like. The U.S. version also offers UMA connectivity, allowing a choice of either cellular or Wi-Fi networks. The Nokia 7510 will be available in the United States starting later this month at T-Mobile retail stores and online at www.t-mobile.com.

Nokia also recently introduced the Nokia N79 Active multimedia device. Aimed at serious athletes and sport enthusiasts, the device ships with a wireless Bluetooth WearLink heart monitor from Polar. This update on the Nokia N79 multimedia device creates a powerful companion for runners, combining A-GPS directions, the popular Nokia Sports Tracker application, and a 5-megapixel camera for uploading and geotagging images taken on route. The Active version of the Nokia N79 also ships with two other devices runners will appreciate: sporty headphones and an armband. The Nokia N79 Active will retail for 375 euros.

Nokia WRT-Aptana Plug-In Available as Public Beta

Forum Nokia recently released the Web Runtime (WRT) plug-in for Aptana Studio (beta), which provides features to enable the creation, editing, testing, and deployment of WRT widgets from within Aptana Studio or Aptana Studio Pro. Aptana Studio is a popular Web development environment that offers integrated language support for HTML, DOM, JavaScript, and CSS; and embedded development platforms and databases for PHP, Jaxer, Ruby on Rails, and Python. Aptana Studio is available free of charge under an open source license, while Aptana Studio Pro is a commercial product. Both products are based on the Eclipse framework. The Nokia WRT plug-in can be used with selected S60 3rd Edition, Feature Pack 1 devices; all S60 3rd Edition, Feature Pack 2 or later devices; and (using an emulator) S60 5th Edition devices.

Qt Gains Flexible Licensing Plan

Nokia recently announced that its Qt cross-platform user interface (UI) and application framework for desktop and embedded platforms will soon be available under the Lesser General Public License (LGPL) version 2.1 license. The change will go into effect with the release of Qt 4.5, scheduled for this March. Previously Qt had been made available to the open source community under the General Public License (GPL) license. Also, Qt source code repositories will be made publicly available to encourage contributions from desktop and embedded developer communities. Qt 4.5 will also be available under commercial licensing terms; licensing for previous versions of Qt will remain unchanged. In addition, service offerings for Qt will be expanded to ensure that all Qt development projects can have access to the same levels of support, independent of the selected license.

S60 Games on Agenda for Forum Nokia's University Programme in China

Forum Nokia continued its university programme in China with a series of S60 training sessions in Chengdu province that attracted 1,000 students from several local universities in Autumn 2008. The sessions focused on Symbian OS and research and development using the S60 platform. The participating companies — Digia, Tieto, Teleca and Neusoft Corp. — also headed two-month training projects following the sessions. Digia, for example, worked with students to develop a mobile game called Real Man that is based on Symbian smartphones. 'I knew nothing about Symbian OS and S60 before the programme', says Shiyang Wu, one of the students. 'Now I can develop programs on S60 using the Symbian SDK.'

Gaming was also on the agenda for students working with Forum Nokia and Neusoft Corp. Their project, an S60 Sudoku game, can generate random Sudoku games with at least 15 levels of play. Yungang Wang, a participating student, says of the program, 'I had a chance to gain knowledge I can't acquire from books.'

Internships are an important part of the Forum Nokia university programme. Participating students have a chance to work with industry professionals. They also can apply the theory they learn in the classroom to the real world, says Pealyn Poon, Training Manager at Forum Nokia.

Design a Custom UI application for Keypad and Touch Devices

A new Forum Nokia document discusses the design and implementation of a Flash Lite application with dynamic layout control for multiple screen resolutions and both key and touch input methods. Other topics covered in the new document include scalability, and UI element design and implementation. Based on those guidelines a basic Sudoku game was created, accompanied with a document to declare the implementation issues. Both Series 40 and S60 devices are supported by one .swf file of the Sudokumaster game.

The same game example was also implemented in native C++ to demonstrate how the layout control and input method issues can be solved there. The original design of the game can be found from the Design and User Experience Library.

Forum Nokia Launches Russian-Language Site

During the recent Mobile Software Forum in St. Petersburg, Russia, Forum Nokia announced the release of the new Russian-language version of the Forum Nokia Web site. The site provides Russian developers with all the basic information and links they need to get started in the fast-paced world of mobile application development and design, including technical information, device specifications, developer discussion forums and blogs, and valuable go-to-market information. 'We will continue to help developers in Russia make mobile applications and services', says Pekka Pohjakallio, a Nokia VP of suites management and marketing. 'This new site is just the first step in that process.'

Wi-Fi Community Developer Wins EMEA Application of the Year Award

WeFi, an application that maps Wi-Fi hotspots, recently won the Forum Nokia EMEA Application of the Year 2008 award in Barcelona, Spain. The application won the honour by gaining the most votes from the award ceremony's audience.

WeFi is a community application that maps Wi-Fi hotspots worldwide according to users' experiences. The application, offered by WeFi Ltd. of Israel, identifies and automatically connects a mobile device or a laptop to the best available Wi-Fi hotspot. It also sends information about the hotspot back to the central server, which then provides the data for other users. Currently the application has nearly 11-million Wi-Fi access points in its database, with another 2-million being added each month.

Nine other companies were named finalists. They include HappyWakeUp, a smart alarm clock.

Developer Spotlight: Sing Along with Mogenesis CaraOK

CaraOK, an application from Forum Nokia PRO member Mogenesis of Beijing, turns an S60 3rd Edition device into a full-fledged karaoke machine. Users can download audio tracks to their S60 devices and sing along while the words appear on their devices' displays. The application, still in beta testing, currently offers lyrics for more than 600 songs, with many more to come. Subscribers can either pay for each download or subscribe on a monthly basis; the latter option offers an unlimited number of downloads. Mogenesis will share the revenue with mobile operators and music distributors/publishers. Forum Nokia PRO helped by providing Mogenesis with technical and marketing support, test devices, introductions to local operator China Mobile, and booth space at the recent Nokia World conference in Barcelona, Spain. 'Nokia', says Sean Zhang, CEO of Mogenesis, 'sped up our development process.'
