Remote Application Configuration Made Easy

A recently published code example on the Forum Nokia site shows how to provision settings on an S60 device using device management (DM). This end-to-end solution incorporates a simple DM adapter in the S60 device that interacts with a Funambol device management server and other freely available components, such as Apache, JBoss, and MySQL. The code example shows how to set up and use a custom DM server, how to store and update the data received from the DM server, and how to make the data available to another application.

Develop Applications for the Nokia E90 Communicator's Big Screen

The Nokia E90 Communicator, the first Nokia Communicator device running on the S60 platform, also features a large (800 x 352 pixel) display that is used when the device is in PDA mode. While this widescreen display is familiar to previous Nokia Communicator Series users, it is completely new to S60 developers. Also, UI designers who are used to working with a QVGA portrait display may have difficulties fitting their applications to the Nokia E90 Communicator's large, widescreen display. A new Forum Nokia document helps developers and designers with widescreen tips and tricks, and it also discusses designing applications for the device.

Java™ ME Developer's Library

Java™ ME Developer's Library, a new aggregation site within the Forum Nokia community, is a complete resource package for developers. It includes introductory, getting started, tutorial, and API-level information for developers wishing to use the S60 or the Series 40 platforms for developing mobile Java applications or services. This library is available in three formats: HTML online, stand-alone, and Eclipse plug-in.

Developer Spotlight: mBit's Multimedia Social Network

Multimedia peer-to-peer (P2P) file sharing has become a social phenomenon. Forum Nokia PRO member mBit Ltd. of Singapore has developed a network that lets mobile consumers exchange photos, videos, music, and other files on a P2P basis using their mobile phones, PCs, or a combination of the two. Consumers are responding. The mBit network was launched as a commercial, ad-sponsored service in December 2007 and, within a month, more than 4,000 users had signed up. The network is now being marketed in Malaysia, Singapore, and Indonesia with mobile operators. Forum Nokia helped by providing mBit developers with prototype devices and by introducing mBit officers to mobile operators. "This reduced our investment and R&D costs significantly," says See Chun Yan, the company's CEO.

LBS Challenge Names Winners

Congratulations to the winners of the NAVTEQ Global LBS Challenge for Europe, Mideast, and Africa! Contest submissions came from 11 countries. Nearly three quarters of the entries included social networking features, and 40% included navigation. The Grand Prize winner was awarded 35,000 euros in cash and licenses worth a total of almost 500,000 euros from NAVTEQ, deCarta, and ptv.

The winners are:

  • Grand Prize: UbiSafe from UbiEst. This personal security application uses location-based services (LBS) to deliver tracking and tracing "fleet-like" capabilities to mobile devices. Parents can use the software to verify and track the positions of other family members on maps, send and receive emergency messages, set up personalized safe zones, and create a "virtual leash" for children.
  • First Runner Up: Chronomove from Senda. This always-on travel-time management application helps commuters select their routes, determine their estimated times of arrival, and more.
  • Second Runner Up: Nearme from Oxford Software. This service searches local points of interest and delivers directions, descriptions and more to the user's mobile device.
  • Third Runner Up: GyPSii. A geo-location and social networking application, GyPSii utilizes user-generated content.

LBS Guru to Host Online Discussion

For developers unable to attend the Forum Nokia LBS Code Camp in Singapore later this month, an online discussion with a map-data expert could be the next best thing. Ejaz Iqbal, a technical consultant at NAVTEQ, the supplier of digital map data, will host an online Forum Nokia discussion on Thursday, February 28, from 11 a.m. to 12 p.m. EST (GMT -5). Iqbal will then return to the thread on Friday, February 29, to answer questions. Attendees of the LBS Code Camp can participate, too, whether during breaks, on the train, or from an airport hot spot.
