Nokia Releases New Publishing to Ovi Solution for Developers

New Ovi Store for commercial distribution of mobile applications and content coming soon.

At Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, Spain, Nokia announced two new programmes that will create ongoing development and revenue opportunities for developers around the world. The first — the new publishing to Ovi solution for developers — is a self-service publishing tool that provides developers with an easy way to distribute and monetise their applications and content to consumers using Nokia devices around the world via the new Ovi Store that will launch in early May of this year.

The other announcement is the formation of the joint $10 million Open Screen Project fund from Nokia and Adobe, which will award grants to developers to help create exciting new applications. (See related story about the Open Screen Project fund.)

Publishing to Ovi
Using the publishing to Ovi service, third-party software and content developers will have easy access to a single Nokia channel — the Ovi Store — to reach millions of consumers worldwide. With a 70% revenue share*, all the applications and content distributed through this new service create instant revenue opportunities for the developers involved. Applications, games, personalisation content, and more will be offered to consumers.

Dedicated and comprehensive resources and support from Forum Nokia are available to help developers get their applications ready for commercial distribution through the Ovi Store.

Ovi Store
The Ovi Store is a scalable media distribution network unrivaled in size and opportunity, with advanced content targeting capabilities that will offer consumers relevant content through their social connections and their physical location information.

The Ovi Store consolidates the best experiences from Nokia's current content services, including Download!, MOSH, and WidSets, into a single channel, and it expands upon Ovi Services to deliver media influenced by the people and places that matter to the end user. Additionally, the new Ovi Store will be the premium distribution channel for Adobe Flash® applications created using funds from the Open Screen Project fund.

The Ovi Store will amplify content provider and developer opportunities, as well as simplify the consumer content discovery process, by offering personally relevant, up-to-the-minute media for their devices.

'The Ovi Store enables Nokia devices uniquely to surface relevant content for consumers based on the people who matter to them and the particular places they happen to be, bringing a new generation of media services to the fingertips of millions of people around the world', said Tero Ojanperä, executive vice president, Nokia Services. 'By leveraging our strengths as a company and the assets of our partners, the Ovi Store is a "smart store" that will change the way our consumers discover and consume content on their mobile devices, ultimately making the experience easier, more fun and, most importantly, more relevant.'

The content in the Ovi Store will be available for both Nokia Series 40 and S60 devices. The Nokia N97 multimedia device, available in June, will be the first device to include the simple and easy-to-use storefront.

At the time of launch in early May, the Ovi Store is expected to be available to tens of millions of Nokia devices, and the service is expected to reach an estimated 300 million consumers by 2012. For content providers and developers, this provides an opportunity to reach a potential universe of hundreds of millions of people, making it the world's largest media network.

Nokia and Adobe Launch $10 Million Open Screen Project Fund

At the GSMA Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, Spain, Nokia and Adobe Systems Incorporated announced the creation of the $10 million Open Screen Project fund, which is designed to help developers create applications and services for mobile, desktop, and consumer electronics devices using the Adobe Flash platform.

The Open Screen Project is a collaboration of more than 20 companies (including Nokia and Adobe) with one clear vision: to enable consumers to access, utilise, and share rich content seamlessly — regardless of the devices, operating systems, browsers, or networks they use. The new fund is a result of this initiative. Additional Open Screen Project partners are expected to join the fund in the future.

Applications that incorporate Adobe Flash Lite will be considered for funding, and initial areas of focus include: entertainment, social networking, productivity, gaming, and news and information. Those projects with broad appeal — and that make the most of Nokia's platform capabilities — are likely to catch the interest of the combined panel of multi-screen application and services experts from Nokia and Adobe, which will review all of the funding requests that are submitted. Developers retain all rights to their applications, while Adobe and Nokia have the right to evaluate, test, and promote the content.

'The Open Screen Project fund encourages the use of Adobe tools and existing developer skills to create exciting and unique Flash applications for millions of Nokia devices', said Tero Ojanpera, executive vice president (EVP), Nokia Services. 'With more than 300-million Flash-enabled Nokia devices in market, we will support these developers through the Forum Nokia developer community, while providing a more targeted distribution channel to consumers with Nokia's Ovi Store.'

Nokia delivers devices on a truly global scale and offers developers dependable platforms that are well integrated with the Flash runtime.

Both Nokia and Adobe plan to bring successful applications to multiple distribution channels, such as on device, aggregators, and others. In turn, these distribution channels will bring rich Flash applications and experiences to market segments around the world, creating new business opportunities for developers.

'We are excited about the Open Screen Project fund and the possibilities it offers to designers and developers worldwide', said David Wadhwani, general manager and vice president, Platform Business Unit at Adobe. 'With more than one billion Flash-enabled mobile phones and devices shipped across multiple platforms, the fund will enable more developers to bring their rich content and services to a large number of mobile users.'

New distribution opportunities
In addition to the creation of the Open Screen Project, Nokia announced the new publishing to Ovi solution for developers, a self-service publishing solution that provides developers with an easy way to distribute and monetise their applications and content to consumers using Nokia devices. Starting in early May of this year the Ovi Store will be available to the public. (See related story about publishing to Ovi.)

With the industry's largest footprint of Adobe Flash supported devices, the Ovi Store will be the premier distribution channel for mobile applications commissioned by the Open Screen Project fund.

In support of the Open Screen Project fund, Forum Nokia and Adobe will produce learning materials and code examples to make it easier for desktop Flash developers to create applications for use on Nokia devices.

Additionally, an online support channel will be made available to developers who receive funding from the Open Screen Project fund, so that Nokia and selected developers can work together to overcome any technical issues that might arise.

Preparing requests for the Open Screen Project fund
If you are thinking about submitting a request to the Open Screen Project fund, there is a tremendous amount of information available to you, from the most basic overview to detailed code examples.

Aptana, Nokia Let Web Developers Create Mobile S60 Applications

Developers using HTML, JavaScript, and CSS — the standard technologies behind most Web pages — can now use those same skills to create mobile applications for Nokia S60 devices. Aptana Inc., maker of Aptana Studio, an open source Ajax and Web development suite, recently added support of Nokia S60 devices and Nokia Web Runtime (WRT) to its collection of tools and services.

In mid-February, Forum Nokia announced the release of the commercial version of the Nokia WRT Plug-In for Aptana Studio, which helps developers create, edit, test, and deploy WRT widgets from within either Aptana Studio or Aptana Studio Pro. Developers can also choose to use other Ajax libraries, as well; Aptana Studio makes these readily available. Also, for rapid testing during development, applications can be deployed to a mobile device via a Bluetooth connection. Best of all, the Aptana tools, as well as the Nokia WRT Plug-In for Aptana Studio, are free.

Developer Spotlight: IntelliGolf Helps Golfers Pick the Right Club

Thanks to a California mobile developer, many golf bags hold not only clubs, drivers, and putters, but also S60 devices. The developer, IntelliGolf Inc., offers IntelliGolf Eagle edition, software that turns a Nokia S60 device into an intelligent golf assistant. IntelliGolf uses global positioning system (GPS) technology and a database of 25,000 golf courses worldwide to tell golfers their distances from the front of the green, back of the green, and center of the green, helping them to select the right clubs for their next shots. Even better, while the software is as accurate as most $300 to $400 dedicated GPS-based golf range finders, it costs only $70. IntelliGolf also offers scoring, statistics, shot tracking, and other features. The Eagle edition runs on all Nokia S60 3rd Edition devices and many S60 2nd Edition devices, too.
