At this week's Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, Spain, Nokia introduced two services that promote mobile navigation, collaboration and sharing:
Nokia Maps 2.0, now available in a beta test version, takes mapping and navigation to the next level with enhanced pedestrian navigation, multimedia city guides, satellite images, and a redesigned user interface. Nokia Maps 2.0 compliments Drive, a car navigation system, with Walk, a pedestrian navigation component that provides visual turn-by-turn guidance. Nokia plans to bring Maps 2.0 to the mass market with a Series 40 version during the first half of this year.
Share on Ovi builds on Nokia's previously announced Ovi Internet services environment by adding a free personal media-sharing service. This service lets users upload, manage and share personal media through a PC, mobile phone, or other connected device. Share on Ovi is a community that lets consumers socialize, interact, and collaborate. It is designed to support more than 100 media types with unlimited storage and 250 megabytes of upload bandwidth per user per month. In addition, the Ovi family of Nokia Internet services are supported by devices that include the new Nokia N96 and Nokia N78 multimedia computer.

The Forum Nokia online community will receive a redesign this year, including improved search and navigation, an improved information architecture, and greater help for developers wishing to solve a technical issue or go-to-market challenge, says Tom Libretto, the new head of Forum Nokia, in an interview conducted by SymbianOne.com. In the interview, Libretto also explains that the Download Client and MOSH will be moved from Forum Nokia into mainstream business units within Nokia. "While these innovations were delivered by Forum Nokia, they are not core to our mission," he says. Libretto also explains Forum Nokia's priorities for maemo™, the S60 platform, Open C, the recent Trolltech acquisition, and Carbide tools.

Fixed-mobile convergence is coming, thanks to Forum Nokia PRO developer DiVitas Networks (PDF) of Mountain View, California. The company's Mobile Unified Communications solution consists of a server that is placed in the enterprise and a client that resides in S60 3rd Edition devices. The service works with any network, S60 device , carrier or PBX. One customer, New College Durham in the U.K., uses the solution to give PC services — including e-mail and calendaring — to its mobile-device users. Forum Nokia helped by providing DiVitas developers with early access to APIs, help with battery usage and access to plug-ins and SDKs.
