Nokia Introduces First Eco-Friendly Device, the 3110 Evolve

At the recent Nokia World conference in Amsterdam, The Netherlands, Nokia introduced a mobile device aimed at today's ecologically concerned consumers. The Nokia 3110 Evolve features "bio-covers" made from more than 50% renewable material. The device is presented in a small package made of 60% recycled materials. It comes with Nokia's most energy-efficient charger yet, using 94% less energy than the Energy Star requirements set by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and U.S. Department of Energy. The 3110 Evolve device is based on Series 40 3rd Edition, Feature Pack 2.

Symbian Signed: New and Improved

Symbian Signed is changing. This month three new and simplified signing options will become available to developers, supported by a new and lower-cost Certificate Authority. Here's a summary of the changes:

Open Signed: This updates and replaces Developer Certificate signing. It includes an online-only option that does not require the purchase of a Publisher ID, making it easy for developers to sign applications for limited deployment to known devices, either for testing or personal use. The option for uploading the SIS for certification will be made available as a beta this month, and it should go into full production early next year. Open Signed also includes an option to sign applications on one's PC. The PC option provides access to CommDD, DiskAdmin, MultimediaDD, and NetworkControl capabilities (which are not available through the online option). The PC option requires the developer to purchase a Publisher ID.

Express Signed: This new option, similar to Self Certification, is now available to all developers, either directly for those who own a Publisher ID, or via publisher partners for those who do not. This is currently in beta.

Certified Signed: This updates and replaces the mainstream signing option based on independent testing by a Symbian-accredited Test House. This option allows access to CommDD, DiskAdmin, NetworkControl, and MultimediaDD capabilities (not available in Express Signed). When the application passes testing, it can use these capabilities in addition to the 13 capabilities previously offered, with no additional approvals needed. Also, test criteria have been renewed to support the capability change, make it easier to use, and tackle common application-quality-related issues. Certified Signed is set for general availability by year's end.

In addition, TCTrustCenter has become the Certificate Authority for Symbian Signed. It is responsible for issuing and validating Publisher ID digital certificates. However, existing ACS Publisher Certificates issued by VeriSign will remain valid for Open Signed and Certified Signed.

Jump into Mobile Java™ Development with NetBeans

With the latest Series 40 and S60 SDKs, Forum Nokia now supports mobile Java™ development using the popular open-source IDEs NetBeans and Eclipse. For developers embarking on mobile Java development, NetBeans and the NetBeans Mobility Pack offer a range of tools that make MIDlet development simple and straightforward. Combined with Nokia PC Suite and a Series 40 or S60 SDK, NetBeans offers an easy route to mobilizing your Java skills. Nokia has shipped over 500 million Java-enabled devices, and the owners of these devices are hungry for applications. With NetBeans, tools from Forum Nokia, and Nokia's consistent implementation of Java technology, there has never been a better time to go mobile.

YouTube Application for S60 Devices Wins Open C Challenge

MobiTubia, developed by Sittiphol Phanvilai of Bangkok, Thailand, is the winner of the 2007 Open C Challenge. The application combines a Flash Lite video player, YouTube portal application, and real-time decoding for the S60 platform. Users can access Flash Lite video clips and browse and search for specific content on YouTube on their S60 devices. Phanvilai developed the application in just 10 weeks, porting more than 25,000 lines of code into Open C and writing more than 10,000 lines of new code.

The three runners-up for the Open C Challenge are: Live Traffic, traffic-assistance software using Floating Car Data (FCD) technology; MobiClass multimedia courseware; and ViewRight, a streaming-video application for watching mobile TV.

Experts Corner: S60 Competence Made to Order

Wipro Ltd., the third-largest IT services company in India with more than 78,000 employees and revenue in excess of $3 billion, is also the operator of the country's only S60 Competence Center. In the past, Bangalore-based Wipro has developed applications for S60 1st and 2nd Edition devices, including a scalable vector-graphics engine, mobile ticketing framework, and solutions based on Bluetooth connectivity. "We have been developing on the S60 platform from the very beginning," says Ravi Kumar Srinivas Kalidindi, S60 Competence Center manager at the company's IT arm, Wipro Technologies.

Now Wipro has turned its attention to S60 3rd Edition. Recently the company completed in-house development of an IP multimedia subsystem framework for Symbian OS and the Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) stack, aimed at helping operators develop converged services. Wipro has also developed VideoOnDemand, an application that enables authorized subscribers to select and stream video clips to their mobile devices. The company also provides consulting and technical services to members of Forum Nokia PRO, Nokia's premium program for developers.

Agile Software Pioneer Wins Nokia Foundation Award

Pekka Abrahamsson, a research professor at VTT Technical Research Centre of Finland, is the winner of the 2007 Nokia Foundation Award. The 10,000-euro award, presented recently in Helsinki, recognizes Abrahamsson's research into developing global software development and processes. Abrahamsson is a pioneer of agile software development, a framework that aims to minimize risk while shortening development times. His Finnish team has created an agile approach for mobile application development known as Mobile-D. Abrahamsoon currently heads FLEXI-ITEA2, a consortium providing a product-development approach that aims to help European software companies move from ideas to products in just six months.

The book also includes sections about the architecture of Symbian OS, the build environment, Symbian OS strings, buffers and data collections, platform security, asynchronous programming using active objects and threads, the client-server framework, and GUI application programming.

Mobile Python: Rapid Prototyping of Applications on the Mobile Platform, by Jürgen Scheible and Ville Tuulos, is a practical, hands-on book that introduces the popular open-source programming language, Python, to mobile developers. The book shows how to program powerful applications easily on Nokia S60 smartphones. A wide range of functionalities are covered, including camera, sound, graphics, Bluetooth, Internet, positioning, messaging, and reading of incoming short message service (SMS) messages. Over 100 fully working application examples are provided, and they can be instantly executed on an S60 phone, then combined, modified, and enhanced by the developer.
