Forum Nokia now features an Application of the Week to showcase recent innovations created by developers working with Nokia. A different application will be promoted online each week, and each featured application will include a one-page summary, a success case offering visitors more detailed information, a video demo, and a direct link to download the application and start using it right away.
Applications will be evaluated through Forum Nokia's "Innovation Funnel," a process involving multiple rounds of review. Over time, Forum Nokia will add a category-based library so visitors can explore and find additional applications that suit their interests. The library's categories will include enterprise applications, games, music and media, productivity, social networking, and more.
Visit Forum Nokia and click on the Application of the Week link at the top of the page.

A remote testing service available to all Forum Nokia members was recently unveiled by DeviceAnywhere. Called the Forum Nokia Virtual Developer Lab (VDL), it is a fee-based service that gives developers online access to more than 40 of Nokia's most popular Series 40 and S60 devices connected to live networks. New devices will be added on a regular basis, including, later this summer, the Nokia N810 Internet Tablet. VDL supplements Forum Nokia's Remote Device Access (RDA) service, which helps developers with testing, demos, and development by connecting them over the Internet to live devices.

Good mobile design is all about creating positive experiences. Good designs bridge the gap between people and technology, making the complex simple. Experienced designers know to look beyond their own work to find inspiration and learn best practices. A new Forum Nokia document highlights several examples of good mobile design. Among those featured are applications from Gmail (e-mail client), OperaMini (browser), EatFi (restaurant guide), The New York Times (mobile news), and ShoZu (social networking).
Get inspired by 10 examples of good mobile design.
Developers working on Symbian, Linux, iPhone, and Windows Mobile platforms will come together on September 10 – 12 at the Mobile Developer Days in Berlin. The event — co-sponsored by Forum Nokia, Symbian, Trolltech, and Acticom — will enable developers, network operators, service providers, and manufacturers to exchange ideas and visions. Tutorials will be offered on topics including location-based services (LBS), Python for S60 devices, and Qt. Forum Nokia will offer a code camp on creating S60 applications with Web designer skills. And developers are scheduled to demo applications that include network coding on S60 devices, mobile application testing, and multiplayer gaming on a single device.

Chinese developers have been steadily gaining momentum in widget development, and the industry is poised to grow further as the 2008 Beijing Olympics usher in new opportunities. Widgets from four leading Chinese developers — Tencent Technology, KongZhong, Magus Soft, and Sohu.com — will be preloaded on Nokia N78 multimedia computers sold in China, delivering updated information directly to mobile users via a rich user interface. Tencent has adopted its popular QQ instant messaging software onto a mobile widget the company calls Mobile QQ. KongZhong offers a widget called NBA News that grabs sports news. Magus Soft's FunGuide widget helps consumers find lifestyle information. And the Sohu Stocks widget provides timely information from the Chinese stock market. Forum Nokia helped all four with tools, technical support, prototype devices, and marketing opportunities.

For users of Nokia devices, the company's MOSH site offers a huge selection of applications, games, themes, ring tones, graphics, and more. But, until now, users have been unable to determine whether a particular application offered on MOSH was compatible with their devices. Now MOSH has taken the guesswork out of searching for applications on the site. When an individual browses or searches on MOSH, the results are filtered for his or her specific device.
The filtering works two ways. For a user with a browser-equipped mobile device, MOSH automatically recognizes the device and displays only the content that is supported by that device. And when registered users search from a PC or Mac, they can adjust their personal settings to select a particular device and receive only compatible search results. For those who can't get enough MOSH content, there is a third option: They can switch off the site's application filter by selecting "See all content."
Download and share free stuff from MOSH.
For more information about MOSH, send an e-mail to Nokia Marketing Manager Jennifer Shah.
Forum Nokia recently launched its university pilot program in China with a series of S60 training sessions in Beijing that attracted nearly 100 students from local universities. The sessions — co-organized by Symbian, TietoEnator, and Teleca — focused on Symbian OS and research and development using the S60 platform.
The three participating companies also headed three-month training projects following the sessions. At TietoEnator, for example, students developed a restaurant menu-ordering system based on Symbian smartphones. "This is a great opportunity for students," says Zhao Likang, TietoEnator's R&D manager. "It's also a big chance for us to introduce our company to these students and find some excellent recruits."
Forum Nokia's university program aims to boost cooperation among Chinese universities, developers, and Nokia, explains Jarmo Rintamaki, manager of university and developer training services at Forum Nokia. "We are delighted by the great interest and motivation of the participating companies," he adds. "TietoEnator has shown us a wonderful example of a successful student training project that we can all try to replicate in the future."
The next Forum Nokia university program in China will launch in Chengdu province in mid-September. The program will target 1,000 students at three universities. The co-organizers are Symbian, TietoEnator, Teleca, and two newly invited partners, Neusoft and Digia.

This summer the Forum Nokia Web site was enhanced to improve the user experience for both new and current members. For new members the registration process is now easier than ever. The registration form is just a single page, and it can be completed in about 30 seconds. For current members, Forum Nokia has added a Google-based search engine that provides results quickly and accurately. Also, the site's right-hand column now displays a Tag Cloud, which lets users add their own metadata (tags) about content on the site. This new navigational tool gives all Forum Nokia visitors an alternate means of finding content.
Check out the site's enhancements.

The S60 sensor framework offers developers an easy, effective means of innovating new ways for users to engage with mobile
devices. At this event, take a deep dive into the S60 sensor framework's functionality and utilizing sensors in applications.
We'll examine details of the sensor APIs available in forthcoming S60 devices and address solutions available for the existing
device base. If you're familiar with working in C and C++ but don’t necessarily have S60 development experience, you'll benefit
greatly from the RGA, Open C, and Open C++ offering. RGA provides APIs for creating graphically rich, high-performance applications
and games without a need for S60 C++ experience, while Open C and Open C++ bring in support for cross-platform POSIX, STL,
IOStreams, and Boost libraries.
