New Mobile Devices Feature WiMAX, CDMA, and VoIP

Nokia recently introduced eight mobile devices: The N810 Internet Tablet WiMAX Edition; two phones for North American markets, the Nokia 3606 and the Nokia 1606 mobile devices; the Nokia 6300i multimedia device, which uses voice over IP (VoIP) connectivity; the Nokia 5000 mobile device, the Nokia 2680 slide, the Nokia 7070 Prism, and the Nokia 1680 classic.

  • The Nokia N810 Internet Tablet WiMAX Edition, introduced at CTIA Wireless 2008 in Las Vegas, is Nokia's first device designed to take advantage of wide-area, high-speed WiMAX networks. This pocket-sized device, an enhancement of the maemo™ open source-based Nokia N810 Internet Tablet introduced late last year, can also take up to 10 gigabytes (GB) of internal memory with an optional microSD memory card. Nokia also upgraded its Internet tablet OS; new features include an enhanced e-mail client, browser support for Chinese characters, and Seamless Software Update functionality. Users of the earlier Nokia N810 and Nokia N800 Internet tablets can upgrade their devices to run on the new OS. The Nokia N810 Internet Tablet WiMAX Edition will be available in the United States starting this summer 2008.
  • The Nokia 3606 and Nokia 1606 mobile devices, both introduced at CTIA Wireless 2008, are CDMA phones intended for the North American market. Both devices combine sleek design with simple, user-friendly interfaces. The Nokia 3606 device features a "hidden 'til lit" display effect, dedicated music keys that provide instant access to as many as 6,000 songs, an optional 8 GB microSD card, stereo Bluetooth compatibility, and 1.3-megapixel camera with an LED flash. The Nokia 1606 device sports a fold-design, easy-access buttons, bright display, and built-in speakerphone; it also doubles as a flashlight, even when powered off. Both devices will ship in the third quarter; the Nokia 3606 device will retail for $179, and the Nokia 1606 device for $109.
  • The Nokia 6300i mobile device offers seamless voice and data mobility across GSM cellular and WLAN networks via SIP-VoIP technology. Based on Series 40 5th Edition, Feature Pack 1, this device includes a 2-megapixel camera with 8x digital zoom, USB 2.0, Bluetooth 2.0 +EDR, Bluetooth stereo, Flash Lite 3.0, and MIDP Java™ 2.1 with additional Java APIs.

At the recent Growing Together 2008 conference in Johannesburg, South Africa, Nokia introduced four phones aimed at replacement buyers in emerging markets.

  • The Nokia 5000 mobile device is a powerful package for an affordable price. Features include a 1.3-megapixel camera, high-resolution (QVGA) display, FM radio, MP3 ring tones, and e-mail support. The phone, based on the Series 40 5th Edition, Feature Pack 1 platform, will ship in the second quarter and retail for 90 euros.
  • The Nokia 2680 slide is the company's first slide device for entry-level consumers. This slim camera phone features an FM radio, MP3 ring tones, expanded phone book, and integrated camera. Shipments will begin in the third quarter, and the phone will retail for 75 euros.
  • The Nokia 7070 Prism is a stylish folding phone with external light effects, themes, wallpaper, MP3 ring tones, and other features aimed at consumers who like to express their personalities with their phones. The Nokia 7070 Prism will ship in the third quarter and retail for 50 euros.
  • The Nokia 1680 classic is the company's most affordable imaging device yet. It combines basic mobile device functionality with a VGA camera and video recording. The device will ship in the second quarter and retail for 50 euros.

Flash Lite in the Spotlight

Flash Lite delivers graphical interactivity to mobile devices, and mobile developers can create Flash Lite content and applications using the same Adobe Flash tools they use for the desktop. This month Forum Nokia is promoting Flash Lite technology with new documents, a Webinar, live events, and more. Here's a preview.

The new Flash Lite Developer's Library provides an information package for desktop Flash and mobile developers who want to begin creating Flash Lite content and applications. The library features an introduction to Flash Lite, information on getting started with Flash Lite development, and use cases that detail various Flash Lite features. Two formats are available: HTML online and stand-alone.

Nokia and Adobe will co-sponsor a Webinar on Flash and Mobile Browsing on April 15 at 3 p.m. GMT. This one-hour Webinar will explore the integration of Flash Lite on mobile devices, give pointers for developing online mobile Flash content, and provide a full question-and-answer session.

Forum Nokia's global series of Code Camps will include sessions to help developers get started developing with Flash Lite. The workshops will combine speaker presentations with hands-on coding, and they will take place around the world throughout the spring.

Developers of Web Runtime (WRT) and Flash applications have the chance to win valuable prizes in the Forum Nokia Code Camp Competition. Prizes will include up to 15,000 euros in cash, demo opportunities at local events, and free transportation and accommodation at the S60 Summit in Barcelona, Spain, on May 28 – 29. To be eligible, entries must use either WRT or Flash, and they must be able to run successfully on a Nokia S60 device. Entries will be judged on quality, functionality, creativity, design, and usability. Both regional and global prizes will be awarded. Global prizes will also be judged for mass appeal, as determined by voting on Nokia's MOSH mobile content-sharing site. The deadline for all entries is May 9.

New Code Examples Help S60 Developers with E-mail, Bluetooth

Forum Nokia recently posted two new sets of code examples for S60 developers working with message type modules (MTMs) and Bluetooth technology.

  • S60 3rd Edition: Creating Custom Message Type Modules (with Example): This C++ document with code example shows ways to create MTMs for S60 3rd Edition and later releases. It is intended for developers implementing their own e-mail protocols — Push e-mail service, for example — where the S60 device's preinstalled e-mail MTMs (POP3, IMAP4) cannot be used. The package demonstrates how to develop and install an MTM, create an account (mailbox), create a simple viewer/editor implemented as a server application, provide support to send from other applications, and receive notifications of new messages.
  • S60 Platform: Bluetooth Point-to-Multipoint Example: This updated C++ example demonstrates the use of Bluetooth technology for device and service discovery, establishing connections to one or more devices, communication between devices, and disconnection. The Bluetooth RFCOMM protocol is used as a transport protocol. The update adds support for limited inquiry (LIAC), which speeds the discovery process considerably.

Developer Spotlight: Kuneri — Create S60 Apps with Flash Lite

How cool would it be if developers and designers could create great-looking S60 applications without any special technical knowledge? Creating mobile applications for S60 devices generally requires knowledge of Symbian OS, the platform's underlying operating system, and the C++ programming language. But simplicity is the promise of Kuneri Ltd.'s KuneriLite, a rapid application development toolkit that lets users create S60 applications on a PC using only Flash Lite. "There is no need to know anything about Symbian OS, since the developer never touches any Symbian code," says Ugur Kaner, CEO and co-founder of Kuneri Ltd. and a new Forum Nokia Champion.
