Keynote Speakers Set Stage for Success

Delegates at the first day of the Nokia Developer Summit gained insight into key drivers of the mobile services market. The Era of Social Location will allow developers to build applications for devices such as the Nokia N97 multimedia device that 'intuitively understand where they are', explained Tero Ojanpera, Executive Vice President, Services, Nokia, in his opening keynote. With integrated assisted global positioning system (A-GPS) sensors and an electronic compass, the Nokia N97 device makes it easy to update social networks automatically with real-time information, giving approved friends the ability to update their status and share their social location, as well as related pictures or videos.

The morning's keynotes continued with a presentation on The Evolution of Open Mobile Platforms. 'An API is open or it is obsolete', declared Lee Williams, Executive Director, Symbian Foundation. 'Without truly open platforms, the number of steps and the time to market alone will kill the best ideas.' In the Mobile Internet Futures presentation, John Faith, Vice President and General Manager of Mobile Operations, MySpace, noted that consumers are looking to 'share narratives around the functionality that is uniquely mobile', and that means leveraging location, presence, and persistence.

First Five Awards for Open Screen Project Fund

The first five winners of funding from the Open Screen Project were announced in the opening keynote by Tero Ojanpera, Executive Vice President, Services, Nokia. Funds are awarded based on specific application ideas.

And the winners are . . .

  • MyFestival from Little Big Ideas, Denmark, is a guide for the Roskilde Music Festival with integrated LBS functionality.
  • Golfbox, also from Little Big Ideas, Denmark, is a golf companion to set tee times, check scores, and mor.e
  • Social Portfolios from Tui Interactive, UK, is a stock, news, and portfolio tracker application.
  • Pocket Piano from Better Day Wireless, USA, is a virtual piano player for touch devices.
  • Barking Seed from Breakdesign, Singapore, is a Web and Flash-based game community for players of Flash Lite games.

The $10 million Open Screen Project Fund, announced by Nokia and Adobe, awards grants to help developers create exciting new applications and content over the next two years up to January 2011. The fund also provides marketing and educational support for the Open Screen Project, which aims to establish cross-platform runtimes, remove development and distribution barriers, and innovate through industry collaboration.

Nokia N97 SDK Available

Building social location services that Tero Ojanpera presented is now possible with the public release of the Nokia N97 SDK beta. The new SDK allows developers to explore the new features and APIs offered by the Nokia N97 device. Using the SDK developers can create applications that take advantage of the new home screen publishing, memory management, and compass APIs. The emulator, which has full Nokia N97 device look-and-feel, enables the testing of these new application capabilities, as well as home screen widgets.

Technology Stream Highlight

Monday's technology stream focused on Web technologies. Luca Passani, CEO and Founder of WURFL-Pro and a Forum Nokia Champion, discussed ways to optimise Web services for mobile devices. He described an architecture where 'one-size-fits-all' will not work, but 'one-content-tree-fits-all' has a chance. The key is to partition your served device universe in a way that makes business sense for you (for example QWERTY vs. T9 vs. touch), develop a limited library of content optimised for each device partition, then develop or leverage a device description repository to route devices to the correct content automatically.

Business Stream Highlight

New details of the Ovi Store were revealed by Eric John, Director, Head of Product Marketing, Media. Eric noted that the Ovi Store will 'leverage what developers already know' while providing a truly next-generation experience. He noted the Ovi Store will be:
  • Global for smartphone and feature phone users

  • Location-aware, allowing apps and the app discovery process to be relevant to the immediate surroundings of the consumer

  • Viral: forward to a friend vis short messaging service (SMS), with contacts integration to come

  • Content intake for media brands and application developers via publish to Ovi

Experience Everything the Nokia Developer Summit Has to Offer

Blogs, videos, and RSS feeds make it possible to learn much of what matters from an event you cannot personally attend. Unfortunately, some aspects you must experience live and in person. The one-on-one Meet the Experts sessions have been a big hit with developers, with personal coaching through some of the finer points of development. The Experience Lounge, in its basic design, allows delegates to hold and experience the latest technologies and services. And the buzz of developers competing for Hackathon honors and meeting with the consumers they serve is perceptible throughout the event.

If you are fortunate enough to be in Monaco with us this week, we're glad you came. If you are experiencing the event remotely, we'll do our best to deliver the best remote experience possible.

Nokia 6216 classic Delivers SIM-Based NFC

Nokia recently introduced the Nokia 6216 classic, a fully integrated, SIM-based Near Field Communication (NFC) device that lets operators build NFC services on the subscriber identity module (SIM) card. With one tap of the device, consumers can share mobile content with other Nokia 6216 classic phones and compatible NFC devices. For example, a consumer could store credit-card information on a device's SIM card and then make a quick payment by waving the device in front of a compatible contact-free terminal.

The Nokia 6216 classic is based on Series 40 5th Edition, Feature Pack 1, and it implements the Contactless Communication API (JSR-257). Additional features include support for 8 GB microSD cards, USB 2.0, Bluetooth 2.0 +EDR, Bluetooth stereo, Flash Lite 2.1, and MIDP Java 2.1 with additional Java APIs. The Nokia 6216 classic will ship in selected markets in the third quarter and retail for 150 euros.

User Experience Program to Launch in May

Customer referrals are among the most compelling drivers for software sales. A forthcoming Forum Nokia program will help developers deliver a consistent, high-quality user experience and maintain their reputations with consumers. The new service will also help developers control costs on their in-house user experience testing. The support program, set to launch in mid-May, will feature three elements:
  • Design and User Experience Library: A collection of details on best practices and guiding principles for software development.

  • User Experience Tool: An online self-help tool that also offers pointers for creating a better user experience.

  • User Experience Evaluation: A professional and low-cost consultancy, handled by an external test house, that provides comprehensive reports, details of potential problem areas, and clear guidance on measures that can improve quality.
