Assoc. Prof.
Denmark
Frank H. P. Fitzek is an Associate Professor in the Department of Communication Technology, University of Aalborg (AAU), Denmark heading the Future Vision group. He received his diploma (Dipl.-Ing.) degree in electrical engineering from the University of Technology - Rheinisch-Westfälische Technische Hochschule (RWTH) - Aachen, Germany, in 1997 and his Ph.D. (Dr.-Ing.) in Electrical Engineering from the Technical University Berlin, Germany in 2002.
In 2005, he won the YRP award for the work on MIMO MDC and during the same year, he received the Young Elite Researcher Award of Denmark. His current research interests are in the areas of 4G wireless communication networks, cross layer protocol design and cooperative networking.
Regarding mobile phone applications, he founded the company acticom in 1999. The focus is on protocol implementation for ROHC and WLAN. At AAU, the first success was the smsZipper, an application that allows to compress SMS messages by a factor by 2-3. This patented solution is now licensed to 3rd parties. In addition to that, the research activities focus on energy savings, P2P networks, cooperative networks, wireless grid computing, sensor networks, and cross layer protocol design. To support these activities protocols such as SIP, VoIP, and others are used.
AAU hosts student projects and lectures in the field of mobile phone applications with respect to Symbian, JAVA, Python, and Linux.
